Effects of dietary carbohydrate restriction versus low-fat diet on flow-mediated dilation

Metabolism, 2009
We previously reported that a carbohydrate-restricted diet (CRD) ameliorated many of the traditional markers associated with metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular risk compared with a low-fat diet (LFD). There remains concern how CRD affects vascular function because acute meals high in fat have been shown to impair endothelial function.

Carbohydrate-Restricted Diet and Acute Coronary Syndrome

American Journal of Therapeutics, 2014
We describe a case of a young patient, motivated to follow a carbohydrate-restricted diet intake for 6 years, who presented with an acute myocardial infarction.

Clinical Trial Experience with Fat‐Restricted vs. Carbohydrate‐Restricted Weight‐Loss Diets

Obesity Research, 2004
AbstractIt is unlikely that one diet is optimal for all overweight or obese persons. Both low‐fat and low‐carbohydrate diets have been shown to induce weight loss and reduce obesity‐related comorbidities. Low‐carbohydrate diets cause greater short‐term (up to 6 months) weight loss than low‐fat diets, but the long‐term clinical safety and efficacy of ...

A 28-Day Carbohydrate-Restricted Diet Improves Markers of Cardiovascular Disease in Professional Firefighters

Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, 2020
Abstract Waldman, HS, Smith, JW, Lamberth, J, Fountain, BJ, Bloomer, RJ, Butawan, MB, and McAllister, MJ. A 28-day carbohydrate-restricted diet improves markers of cardiovascular disease in professional firefighters. J Strength Cond Res 34(10): 2785–2792, 2020—This study compared the effects of a 4-week, nonketogenic, carbohydrate-restricted (

Influence of carbohydrate-restricted versus calorie-restricted diets on rat placental glycogen

Nutrition Research, 1990
Abstract Maternal blood glucose is the principle metabolic fuel for the developing placenta and fetus, and is the precursor for the large glycogen reserves that accumulate in the placenta and fetal liver during gestation. In this study we investigated whether maternal dietary glucose restriction would lead to lowered placental glycogen levels and ...

Medical and Psychological Considerations for Carbohydrate-Restricted Diets in Youth With Type 1 Diabetes

Current Diabetes Reports, 2019
Given the challenges achieving recommended glycemic targets in youth with type 1 diabetes (T1D), providers may consider recommending carbohydrate-restricted diets (CRDs) to optimize glycemic control. The goal of the present review is to describe relevant literature on the potential medical and psychosocial benefits and risks of CRDs in youth with T1D ...

Carbohydrate-restricted diet promotes skin senescence in senescence-accelerated prone mice.

Biogerontology, 2019
This study used senescence-accelerated prone mice (SAMP8) to examine the effects of a carbohydrate-restricted diet on aging and skin senescence, to determine how long-term carbohydrate restriction affects the aging process. Three-week-old male SAMP8 mice were divided into three groups after 1 week of preliminary feeding: one was given a controlled diet,

Effect of carbohydrate restriction and high carbohydrate diets on men with chemical diabetes

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 1977
The influence of low carbohydrate (CHO) diets, starvation, and high CHO diets on glucose tolerance tests (GTT) and plasma insulin response of men with chemical diabetes was studied. The GTT and insulin responses of these seven lean diabetic men were unchanged when the carbohydrate content of the diet was reduced from 44 to 20% of calories.
