Carbohydrate Malabsorption in Necrotizing Enterocolitis
Pediatrics, 1976A prospective investigation was conducted to determine if infants with necrotizing enterocolitis had evidence of carbohydrate intolerance prior to the onset of clinical symptoms of advanced disease. Stool specimens were examined for fecal reducing substances with Clintest tablets from well, full-term infants and sick premature infants.

Carbohydrate malabsorption following acarbose administration
Diabetic Medicine, 1998Carbohydrate absorption was assessed during acarbose administration to investigate the actions of this drug. In 7 healthy volunteers, breath hydrogen concentration was measured at 15-min intervals after administration of 6 g of lactulose, and continued until 4 h after the breath hydrogen level exceeded its pretreatment value by > or =10 ppm, then the ...

Diarrhea Caused By Carbohydrate Malabsorption
Gastroenterology Clinics of North America, 2012This article will focus on the role of the colon in the pathogenesis of diarrhea in carbohydrate malabsorption or physiologically incomplete absorption of carbohydrates, and on the most common manifestation of carbohydrate malabsorption, lactose malabsorption.

[Specific carbohydrate malabsorption].
La Revue du praticien, 2001Specific malabsorption of carbohydrate is related to the lack or decrease in enzymatic activity needed for its hydrolysis; seldom, it is related to the lack or overloading in transport mechanism of monosaccharide. Ingestion of unabsorbed carbohydrate may induce digestive symptoms due to its colonic fermentation (borborygmus, bloating, pain, and flatus)

Carbohydrate malabsorption in infants with rotavirus diarrhea
The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 1982We studied a group of patients with rotavirus diarrhea to determine the association of carbohydrate malabsorption during diarrhea with the degree of acidosis and severity of purging. Unlike enterotoxigenic diarrhea in which the metabolic acidosis is due to loss of bicarbonate in an alkaline stool, patients with rotavirus develop a metabolic acidosis ...

Antibiotics and Carbohydrate Malabsorption in Newborns
Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, 1986In this issue, Bhatia et al 1 report that full-term neonates who received parenteral antibiotics had a greater stool frequency, higher incidence of fecal-reducing substances, and greater requirement for dietary manipulation than did matched controls who did not receive antibiotics.

The clinical impact of carbohydrate malabsorption
Arab Journal of Gastroenterology, 2011Malabsorption of carbohydrates such as fructose, lactose or sorbitol can often be detected among patients suffering from so-called non specific abdominal complaints. Sometimes the differential diagnosis may be difficult. So far successful treatment consists of dietary interventions only. Nevertheless, many questions are remaining still unanswered.

[Diagnosis of carbohydrate malabsorption].
Tijdschrift voor kindergeneeskunde, 1981After a review of causes and symptoms of sugar malabsorption and the usual diagnostic methods, the application is described of a recently developed procedure with high specificity and sensitivity: the hydrogen breath test. Examination of a large number of children shows that its sensitivity is higher than that of the procedures used so far, that ...

Basic causes of carbohydrate malabsorption
1980Carbohydrates are important constituents of the diet of man throughout the world and, following intestinal hydrolysis and absorption, provide a critical source of metabolic energy. Defects in hydrolysis and/or absorption result in retention of residues within the intestinal tract, and gastrointestinal symptoms, i.e. carbohydrate or sugar ‘intolerance’.

Malabsorption of Carbohydrates and Depression in Children and Adolescents
Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, 2005ABSTRACTBackground:Previous studies have shown an association between sugar malabsorption and depressive symptoms in adult women. Incompletely absorbed sugars may form nonabsorbable complexes with tryptophan, an amino acid precursor of serotonin, decreasing its availability.
