Variabilities of dissolved inorganic carbon along chain-shaped karst river-reservoir continuum: The control of cascade damming

open access: yesJournal of Hydrology: Regional Studies
Study Region: The natural river, reservoir profiles, and inflow/outflow waters of ten cascade reservoirs along the Xijiang River in the subtropical karst region of southern China were studied.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Spatio-temporal dynamics and drivers of drying conditions in the HRB: Unraveling the role of precipitation intensity and total precipitation in drying risk

open access: yesJournal of Hydrology: Regional Studies
Study region: The Hangbu River Basin (HRB), located in eastern China, is the largest sub-basin of the Chaohu Lake Basin. Study focus: In recent decades, the HRB has experienced increased drying and spatial heterogeneity in its hydrological conditions ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

MEDUSA-2.0: an intermediate complexity biogeochemical model of the marine carbon cycle for climate change and ocean acidification studies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
MEDUSA-1.0 (Model of Ecosystem Dynamics, nutrient Utilisation, Sequestration and Acidification) was developed as an "intermediate complexity" plankton ecosystem model to study the biogeochemical response, and especially that of the so-called "biological ...

Discussion on the formulas used to calculate the dissolution rate by the rock tablet method

open access: yesCarsologica Sinica
The dissolution rate of carbonate rocks is an important parameter for investigating the karst carbon cycle and evaluating the carbon sink effect; as well as a key indicator for studying karst development and karst hydrogeological problems.

Remote sensing of young leaf photosynthetic capacity in tropical and subtropical evergreen broadleaved forests [PDF]

open access: yesEarth System Science Data
Determining the large-scale RuBisCO carboxylation maximum rate (Vc,max25) in relation to leaf age is essential for evaluating the photosynthetic capacity of canopy leaves in global forests.

Carbon Cycle Uncertainty in REgional Carbon Cycle Assessment and Processes (RECCAP) [PDF]

open access: yesBiogeosciences, 2012
Characterisation of estimates of regional carbon budgets and processes is inherently a statistical task. In full form this means that almost all quantities used or produced are realizations or instances of probability distributions.
