The ion plating of carbon

Thin Solid Films, 1977
Abstract Ion-plated coatings of carbon have been deposited on several metal substrates The coatings are very adherent and in contrast with vacuum-evaporated films have a highly graphitic crystal structure. They are wear resistant and have a low friction coefficient.

Ions and carbon nanostructures

Radiation Effects and Defects in Solids, 2013
First experiments on swift ion irradiation of highly oriented pyrolythic graphite led to formation of carbon nanotubes (CNT) at the cascade eruption points. CNT length was in the micron range, which corresponded to an explosive crystallization of the carbon plume with about sound velocity.

Biological characteristics of carbon-ion therapy

International Journal of Radiation Biology, 2009
Radiotherapy using charged and/or high-linear energy transfer (LET) particles has a long history, starting with proton beams up to now carbon-ions. Radiation quality of particle beams is different from conventional photons, and therefore the biological effects of high-LET irradiation have attracted scientific interests of many scientists in basic and ...

Comparison of Carbon Ions Versus Protons

The Cancer Journal, 2009
At present, beam ion beam therapy has started to spread worldwide. In Europe and Asia, combined carbon/proton facilities are favored, but in the US, only proton centers are under construction. This development is partially due to the different funding procedures and partially due to the more complex physical and especially biologic features of the ...

Strip injection for carbon ion synchrotrons

Review of Scientific Instruments, 2007
Requirements and effects of strip injection of C4+ at 6MeV∕u into carbon ion synchrotrons are studied. The setup is composed of three chicane dipoles, one Lambertson septum, and one carbon stripping foil at a thickness of 60μg∕cm2. The required length of the injection section is about 4.1m.

Gantries for carbon ions

Health and Technology
PurposeThis article summarizes the short lecture on gantries given at the "Hadrontherapy: status and perspectives. Development of a hadrontherapy facility: learning from the existing" event. Methods and materialsAn introduction to gantries is given describing what a gantry is and which are the main difficulties and choices for an ion gantry.

Carbon Electrodes for K-Ion Batteries

Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2015
We for the first time report electrochemical potassium insertion in graphite in a nonaqueous electrolyte, which can exhibit a high reversible capacity of 273 mAh/g. Ex situ XRD studies confirm that KC36, KC24, and KC8 sequentially form upon potassiation, whereas depotassiation recovers graphite through phase transformations in an opposite sequence ...

Metal Ion Function in Carbonic Anhydrase

Angewandte Chemie International Edition in English, 1972
AbstractThe purpose of this review is to present an up‐to‐date account of the chemistry of the metal ion in the enzyme carbonic anhydrase. The interest lies in how the study of the metal may lead to deductions concerning the chemistry of the enzyme's action and in the way that metalloenzyme chemistry seems to demand a new appraisal of some aspects of ...

Clinical Indications for Carbon Ion Radiotherapy

Clinical Oncology, 2018
Compared with photon and proton therapy, carbon ion radiotherapy (CIRT) offers potentially superior dose distributions, which may permit dose escalation with the potential for improved sparing of adjacent normal tissues. CIRT has increased biological effectiveness leading to increased tumour killing compared with other radiation modalities.

Electromigration Forces on Ions in Carbon Nanotubes

Physical Review Letters, 2005
We calculate the electromigration forces on ions such as adsorbed alkali metal atoms in a carbon nanotube transistor. The forces are especially large in the turn-on regime of the transistor and much smaller in the off and on states. Electromigration in the channel is driven almost exclusively by the wind force. The sign of the "effective valence" Z* is
