Visualization of Real‐Time Esophageal Location Using Intracardiac Echocardiography on a Three‐Dimensional Mapping System: Comparison of Esophageal Location Using Preoperative Computed Tomography and Investigation of Predictors for Esophageal Movement During Catheter Ablation

open access: yesJournal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology, EarlyView.
Esophageal imaging using intracardiac echocardiography (ICE‐Eso) showed a more accurate real‐time esophageal location than preoperative computed tomography (CT‐Eso). Non‐fasting on the day of catheter ablation (CA) may be a predictor of esophageal movement on the day of CA.

Tension pneumothorax on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation leading to significant pneumoperitoneum. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Veno-venous and veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy is used to support the cardiac and pulmonary systems in the setting of acute failure. Maintaining adequate ECMO flow is crucial for the success of the therapy.

Missed cardiac tamponade [PDF]

open access: yesBMJ Case Reports, 2011
Cardiac tamponade can have an insidious onset, becoming life threatening when an adequate cardiac output can no longer be maintained. This case provides an example of a presentation where all the classic signs were present but unfortunately they were missed, in this way providing good revision of what these signs are.

Impact of Pulsed‐Field Ablation on the Left Atrial Appendage Diameter—Insights From Intra‐Procedural Echocardiography

open access: yesJournal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology, EarlyView.
Impact of pulsed‐field ablation on the left atrial appendage diameter ABSTRACT Introduction Concomitant pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) and left atrial appendage (LAA) occlusion (LAAO) have become frequently used therapies. Pulsed‐field ablation (PFA), will likely be used for combined PVI plus LAAO procedures.

Pericardial effusion and outcome in children at a Tertiary Hospital in North-Western Nigeria: A 2-year retrospective review

open access: yesResearch in Cardiovascular Medicine, 2019
Background: Pericardial effusion may culminate in cardiac tamponade which could be fatal. This study aims to describe the prevalence of cardiac tamponade, with the etiology, and outcome of childhood pericardial effusion at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital ...

Surgical management of cardiac tamponade: Is left anterior minithoracotomy really safe and effective? [PDF]

open access: yes
Objective: Cardiac tamponade is a life-threatening clinical entity that requires an emergency treatment. Cardiac tamponade can be caused both by benign and malignant diseases.

Evaluating a trainee’s progress in surgical dexterity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
The local cardiac surgical training program is modelled on a one-to-one apprenticeship encompassing a number of years. Trainee progress is regularly audited and work of increasing complexity is provided, commensurate with the trainee's ability. Speed and

Two cases of delayed cardiac tamponade due to pericarditis after pulmonary vein (PV) isolation for atrial fibrillation.

open access: yesInternal medicine, 2015
Catheter ablation is an established treatment for atrial fibrillation (AF). The incidence of major complications related to the procedure is reported to be 4.5%, and delayed cardiac tamponade (DCT) is a rare, although recently recognized, complication ...

Minimizing Atrioesophageal Fistula Risk After AF Ablation: Risk Factors, Prevention, and Emerging Mini‐Thermal Technology

open access: yesPacing and Clinical Electrophysiology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Atrial esophageal fistula (AEF) is a rare but life‐threatening complication of atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation, linked to thermal injuries by conventional radiofrequency (RF) and cryo‐balloon (CB) ablation techniques. AEF risk can be mitigated by considering several measures such as tailored power settings of ablation technique, mechanical ...
