The core competencies in hospital medicine: Procedures 2025 update

open access: yesJournal of Hospital Medicine, EarlyView.
Abstract This article presents an updated framework from the Society of Hospital Medicine for individual learning objectives related to key procedures in hospital medicine. Building upon the 2017 framework, these objectives have been revised to reflect evolving clinical evidence, advancements, and shifts in hospital medicine practice patterns.

Machine learning models for predicting in-hospital mortality from acute pancreatitis in intensive care unit

open access: yesBMC Medical Informatics and Decision Making
Background Acute pancreatitis (AP) represents a critical medical condition where timely and precise prediction of in-hospital mortality is crucial for guiding optimal clinical management. This study focuses on the development of advanced machine learning

An evolutionary approach to continuously estimate CPR quality parameters from a wrist-worn inertial sensor [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is one of the most critical emergency interventions for sudden cardiac arrest. In this paper, a robust sinusoidal model-fitting method based on a Evolution Strategy inspired algorithm for CPR quality parameters -- naming chest compression frequency and depth -- as measured by an inertial measurement unit (IMU ...

Gender Disparities Among Adult Recipients of Bystander Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation in the Public

open access: yesCirculation. Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes, 2018
Background: Bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (BCPR) improves survival from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA), yet BCPR rates remain low. It is unknown whether BCPR delivery disparities exist based on victim gender.

Complications Following Open Versus Minimally Invasive Resection of Gastric Adenocarcinoma

open access: yesJournal of Surgical Oncology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background and Objectives Gastric adenocarcinoma (GA) is commonly treated with open or minimally invasive surgery (MIS). The preferred surgical approach remains unclear. This study sought to assess utilization over time, compare complication rates by surgical approach, and identify predictors of experiencing complications. Methods Patients who

iRescU - Data for Social Good Saving Lives Bridging the Gaps in Sudden Cardiac Arrest Survival [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2016
Currently every day in the USA 1000 people die of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) outside of hospitals or ambulances - before emergency medical help arrives - in the streets, workplaces, schools and homes of our cities, adults and children. Brain death commences in 3 minutes, and often the ambulance just can't be there in time.

Regional outbreak of parvovirus B19 acute myocarditis in preschool children

open access: yesPediatric Investigation, EarlyView.
We recently came across an outbreak of parvovirus B19 related acute myocarditis in preschool children in a specific region in northern Greece. The children exhibited serious morbidity and mortality. All children had very poor left ventricular ejection fraction and required inotropic intensive care unit support.
