Cardiovascular risk factors, global cardiovascular risk, and vascular age in a cohort of Peruvian HIV patients

open access: yesHIV & AIDS Review. International Journal of HIV-Related Problems
Introduction Data on cardiovascular risk and vascular age in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) from developing countries are scarce. Therefore, the current study aimed to determine the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors, global ...

Lipoprotein(a): A Genetically Determined, Causal, and Prevalent Risk Factor for Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association.

open access: yesArteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, 2021
High levels of lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)], an apoB100-containing lipoprotein, are an independent and causal risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases through mechanisms associated with increased atherogenesis, inflammation, and thrombosis. Lp(a)

Chemokines and Cardiovascular Risk [PDF]

open access: yesArteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology, 2008
Based on the importance of inflammation in atherogenesis, recent work has focused on whether plasma markers of inflammation can noninvasively diagnose and prognosticate atherosclerotic disorders. Although several studies support an important pathogenic role of chemokines in atherosclerosis, potentially representing attractive therapeutic targets in ...

Therapeutic strategies for MMAE‐resistant bladder cancer through DPP4 inhibition

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We established monomethyl auristatin E (MMAE)‐resistant bladder cancer (BC) cell lines by exposure to progressively increasing concentrations of MMAE in vitro. RNA sequencing showed DPP4 expression was increased in MMAE‐resistant BC cells. Both si‐DPP4 and the DPP4 inhibitor sitagliptin suppressed the viability of MMAE‐resistant BC cells.

Electronic Cigarettes and Cardiovascular Risk: Caution Waiting for Evidence

open access: yesEuropean Cardiology Review, 2019
Electronic cigarettes use is a growing trend in contemporary societies, with the propensity to compete with traditional tobacco smoking. Some preclinical studies demonstrated the toxic and detrimental effects of electronic cigarettes liquid components ...

Can machine-learning improve cardiovascular risk prediction using routine clinical data?

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2017
Background Current approaches to predict cardiovascular risk fail to identify many people who would benefit from preventive treatment, while others receive unnecessary intervention.

Cardiovascular risk of smoking and benefits of smoking cessation

open access: yesJournal of Thoracic Disease, 2020
Smoking increases mortality from all causes and has a crucial role in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Active smoking and secondhand smoke exposure determine more than 30% of coronary heart disease (CHD) mortality.

Thrombolytic proteins profiling: High‐throughput activity, selectivity, and resistance assays

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We present optimized biochemical protocols for evaluating thrombolytic proteins, enabling rapid and robust screening of enzymatic activity, inhibition resistance, and fibrin affinity, stimulation, and selectivity. The outcome translates to key clinical indicators such as biological half‐life and bleeding risk. These assays streamline the development of

Cardiovascular risk profile and frailty in a population-based study of older British men. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
BACKGROUND: Frailty in older age is known to be associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. However, the extent to which frailty is associated with the CVD risk profile has been little studied. Our aim was to examine the associations of a range of
