The difference of the composition and digestive enzymes of gut microbiome in herbivorous blunt snout bream (Megalobrama amblycephala) and carnivorous largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides)

open access: yesAquaculture and Fisheries
Blunt snout bream (Megalobrama amblycephala) and largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) are a herbivorous and a carnivorous freshwater fish species respectively.

Global meta‐analysis reveals urban‐associated behavioural differences among wild populations

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
Urbanization drives rapid phenotypic change, yet broad patterns of behavioural responses remain unclear. Using a global phylogenetic meta‐analysis, we show urban populations exhibit increased boldness, aggression, exploration and activity—especially in birds—highlighting consistent behavioural shifts and revealing major taxonomic gaps that limit our ...

Carcass yield of surubins Pseudoplatystoma spp. reared in ponds under different stocking densities

open access: yesSemina: Ciências Agrárias, 2014
The aim of this study was to evaluate carcass yield of surubins Pseudoplatystoma spp. reared in ponds under different stocking densities. We performed a completely randomized design, with three treatments (density) and nine repetitions.

Domestic feed sources to farmed Arctic Charr (Salvelinus alpinus) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
This study presents an overview of recapturing nutrients from Baltic Sea thru mussel farming and producing mussel meal, detoxification of polluted fish into purified high quality fish meal and oil and introducing microorganisms as waste consumers as well

Increased tolerance to humans among disturbed wildlife. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Human disturbance drives the decline of many species, both directly and indirectly. Nonetheless, some species do particularly well around humans. One mechanism that may explain coexistence is the degree to which a species tolerates human disturbance ...

A reassessment of the carnivorous status of salmonids: Hepatic glucokinase is expressed in wild fish in Kerguelen Islands

open access: yesScience of The Total Environment, 2018
Salmonids belong to a high trophic level and are thus considered as strictly carnivorous species, metabolically adapted for high catabolism of proteins and low utilisation of dietary carbohydrates. However they conserved a "mammalian-type" nutritional regulation of glucokinase encoding gene and its enzymatic activity by dietary carbohydrates which ...

Predator‐guild‐specific parental responses mitigate higher predation risk on ground nests close to forest patches in a mosaic landscape

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
Predation increases close to habitat edges, but how animals cope with local predation variations remained poorly studied. In a mosaic landscape, lapwings were compensating for increased nest predation close to forests. They acted more aggressively towards an avian predator when nesting close to trees, but comparatively tamer against a mammal.

Aquaculture development in Thailand [PDF]

open access: yes, 1988
Aquaculture practised in Thailand is in the form of pond culture and cage culture in freshwater, brackishwater and coastal areas. The main species cultured include freshwater prawns, brackishwater shrimp, cockles, mussels, and various freshwater and ...

Comparison of Three Sympatric Desert Lizards: Digestive Tract Structure, Digestive Enzyme Activities, Gut Microbiota, and Metabolites

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
We performed 16S rDNA sequencing and metabolite profiling for three sympatric lizard species—Teratoscincus roborowskii, Phrynocephalus axillaris, and Eremias roborowskii—and compared their goblet cell and enzyme activities in the digestive tract. Our study suggests that the dietary niche may promote divergence or convergence of microbiota across host ...
