Thumb Carpometacarpal Instability

Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, 2021
The basal joint complex of the thumb provides the framework necessary for function of the human hand. Although its unique saddle articulation allows for a wide range of motion necessary for routine function of the hand, it is rendered inherently unstable because of poor bony congruency and reliance on its capsuloligamentous support. Painful instability

Carpometacarpal arthritis of the thumb

The Journal of Hand Surgery, 1996
Forty-five flexor carpi radialis (FCR) tendon interposition arthroplasties of the trapezium for the treatment of carpometacarpal osteoarthritis were reviewed. The average follow-up period was 103 months (range, 22-213 months). Pain was reduced in 42 (93%) of the cases. Mobility was equal to that of the unoperated side.

The fourth carpometacarpal joint

The Journal of Hand Surgery, 1991
The base of the fourth metacarpal and the corresponding hamate/capitate articulation were the areas of most significant variation in 142 cadaveric wrists that were dissected to assess the variation of the shapes of the second through the fifth carpometacarpal joints. Five different shapes of the fourth metacarpal base were identified.
