Ultrasound Thawing Enhances Myofibrillar Protein Integrity and Quality Attributes of Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio) Fillets

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 14, Issue 5, May 2026.
Effects of different thawing methods on protein integrity and quality of common carp fillets. ABSTRACT Freezing and thawing are critical techniques for preserving seafood quality and extending shelf life. This study evaluated the effects of ultrasound‐assisted (UT), water immersion (WT), and microwave (MT) thawing on physicochemical, textural, and ...

Morphology and Distribution of Olfactory Receptor Neurons in Southern Bluefin Tuna, Thunnus maccoyii (Teleostei): Implications for Olfactory Hydrodynamics

open access: yesJournal of Morphology, Volume 287, Issue 5, May 2026.
The number and distribution of olfactory receptors over the olfactory lamellar surface of four juvenile southern bluefin tuna were quantified using scanning electron microscopy. The microvillous olfactory receptors (mORN) are concentrated in the rostral region of the lamellar surface, while ciliated olfactory receptors (cORN), which are dominant in ...

Anthropogenic disturbance and trophic interactions mediate population viability of American martens

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, Volume 90, Issue 4, May 2026.
We present a simulation model of the probability of collapse to <10% of carrying capacity for American marten populations over a 50‐year time frame in relation to forest disturbance due to commercial harvesting and fur‐trapping levels. Probability of collapse differed between models that assumed no effect of logging (solid line), martens living in a ...

Altered greenhouse gas emissions in shallow lakes invaded by common carp (Cyprinus carpio)

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography Letters, Volume 11, Issue 3, May 2026.
Abstract Species invasions are among the most important environmental problems facing freshwater ecosystems this century, contributing to biodiversity loss and changes in ecosystem function. Freshwater lakes are an important component of the global carbon cycle and a key source of atmospheric greenhouse gases, yet the consequences of species invasions ...

The subunit composition of the mammalian Mediator complex is not conserved in all vertebrates: Insights from evolutionary plasticity of fish genomes

open access: yesProtein Science, Volume 35, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract The Mediator complex is an indispensable, multi‐subunit protein transcriptional coactivator with a central role in gene expression in Eukaryotes. Among vertebrates, its molecular structure and subunit composition are well‐known only for mammals.

Valorization of Garcinia humilis Residues in Active Collagen/Starch Films for Biodegradable Packaging Applications

open access: yesPackaging Technology and Science, Volume 39, Issue 5, Page 517-531, May 2026.
Residues from Garcinia humilis were used to obtain a phenolic‐rich extract (GHRE) and incorporated into collagen–starch films. The addition of GHRE improved antioxidant activity, thermal stability and elasticity, while reducing water vapour permeability.
