Oligocene sawfish from Breg near Čeplje, Slovenia

open access: yesGeologija, 2004
In paper a 168 mm long rostral tooth of a cartilaginous fish – sawfish from Breg near Čeplje is decsribed. In its proximal part the tooth is thick and broad, and in the distal part narrow, very flattened and thinned.

The role of two anatomically separate olfactory bulbs in shark food odor tracking [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Most sharks have well-developed olfactory systems and depend to a large degree on odor information to locate food, home and navigate, and possibly detect predators and mates.

The role of data in model building and prediction: a survey through examples [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The goal of Science is to understand phenomena and systems in order to predict their development and gain control over them. In the scientific process of knowledge elaboration, a crucial role is played by models which, in the language of quantitative ...

Tough, Ductile, and Strong Hard‐Soft Cementitious Composite Enabled by Multi‐Material Additive Manufacturing

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Drawing inspiration from the layered hard‐soft architecture found in sea sponges, this work establishes a new framework for architected cementitious composites (ACC) through multi‐material additive manufacturing (MMAM) process. The integration of mortar and elastomer phases into layered architectures enables synergistic toughening mechanisms, including

Factors affecting the fishing impact on cartilaginous fishes in southeastern Spain (western Mediterranean Sea)

open access: yesScientia Marina, 2014
We propose a global index of impact based on the relative vulnerability of the local population of every species and the further application of regression trees globally optimized with evolutionary algorithms to study the fishing impact on the ...

Comparative developmental osteology of the seahorse skeleton reveals heterochrony amongst Hippocampus sp. and progressive caudal fin loss [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Background: Seahorses are well known for their highly derived head shape, prehensile tail and armoured body. They belong to the family of teleosts known as Syngnathidae, which also includes the pipefishes, pipehorses and seadragons. Very few studies have

Synchronizing the Osteochondral Regeneration Process through Spatial Patterning of Stable and Hypertrophic Cartilage Organoids

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Zonated osteochondral assembloid implants are engineered through scaffold‐free spatial assembly of induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)‐derived chondrocyte organoids and periosteum‐derived osteogenic organoids. Implanted into full‐thickness rat osteochondral defects, they promote hyaline‐like cartilage repair, support subchondral bone formation with ...

Histochemical Study of Enzyme Activity in the Digestive Tract of the Small-Spotted Catshark (Scyliorhinus canicula) and the Smooth-Hound (Mustelus mustelus)

open access: yesFishes
The small-spotted catshark and the smooth-hound are cartilaginous, carnivorous fish with similar depth ranges in their habitats. These two species are among the most abundant elasmobranchs in the Adriatic Sea and are frequently caught by local fishermen ...

Flexible Dielectric Acoustic Resonator Patch for Tissue Regeneration

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A flexible dielectric acoustic resonator patch enables MHz‐range ultrasound generation through resonance amplification without using piezoelectric materials. Conformal integration on a curved substrate allows efficient acoustic delivery to tissue‐mimicking environments.
