Increased glutarate production by blocking the glutaryl-CoA dehydrogenation pathway and a catabolic pathway involving l-2-hydroxyglutarate

open access: yesNature Communications, 2018
It is known that the five carbon platform chemical glutarate can be catabolized by the glutaryl-CoA dehydrogenation pathway. Here, the authors discover an additional glutarate catabolic pathway involving l-2-hydroxyglutarate and show increased glutarate ...

A Measure of Control for Secondary Cytokine-Induced Injury of Articular Cartilage: A Computational Study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
In previous works, the author and collaborators establish a mathematical model for injury response in articular cartilage. In this paper we use mathematical software and computational techniques, applied to an existing model to explore in more detail how

Interstitial Collagen Catabolism [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Biological Chemistry, 2013
Interstitial collagen mechanical and biological properties are altered by proteases that catalyze the hydrolysis of the collagen triple-helical structure. Collagenolysis is critical in development and homeostasis but also contributes to numerous pathologies. Mammalian collagenolytic enzymes include matrix metalloproteinases, cathepsin K, and neutrophil

Dapagliflozin prevents methylglyoxal‐induced retinal cell death in ARPE‐19 cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Diabetic macular oedema is a diabetes complication of the eye, which may lead to permanent blindness. ARPE‐19 are human retinal cells used to study retinal diseases and potential therapeutics. Methylglyoxal is a compound increased in uncontrolled diabetes due to elevated blood glucose.

The Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. trifolii RosR: Transcriptional Regulator Involved in Exopolysaccharide Production

open access: yesMolecular Plant-Microbe Interactions, 2007
The acidic exopolysaccharide is required for the establishment of symbiosis between the nitrogen-fixing bacterium Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. trifolii and clover. Here, we describe RosR protein from R. leguminosarum bv.

Cupriavidus metallidurans CH34 Possesses Aromatic Catabolic Versatility and Degrades Benzene in the Presence of Mercury and Cadmium

open access: yesMicroorganisms, 2022
Heavy metal co-contamination in crude oil-polluted environments may inhibit microbial bioremediation of hydrocarbons. The model heavy metal-resistant bacterium Cupriavidus metallidurans CH34 possesses cadmium and mercury resistance, as well as genes ...

Iron homeostasis disruption and lipid peroxidation in skeletal muscle during short‐term immobilization

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
14‐day casting‐induced immobilization reduced gastrocnemius muscle mass and increased non‐heme iron and ferritin heavy chain levels. Despite iron accumulation, transferrin receptor 1 and iron regulatory protein 2 were paradoxically upregulated. Lipid peroxidation was elevated without compensatory antioxidant responses.

Retromer in Osteoblasts Interacts With Protein Phosphatase 1 Regulator Subunit 14C, Terminates Parathyroid Hormone's Signaling, and Promotes Its Catabolic Response

open access: yesEBioMedicine, 2016
Parathyroid hormone (PTH) plays critical, but distinct, roles in bone remodeling, including bone formation (anabolic response) and resorption (catabolic response).
