Summary The activity of catalase (H2O2:H2O2 oxidoreductase, EC 1.11.1.6) in the horse erythrocyte and its ability to protect haemoglobin against oxidation by peroxide have been studied. Both catalase and haemoglobin are shielded by a permeability barrier in the intact cell, presumably the red-cell membrane.

Abstract The peroxidatic mechanism for the catalytic reaction and for peroxidation has been extended from haematin basis to include the catalase molecule as a whole. It has been shown that interaction among single haematin units does not affect the form of the rate equations for the catalatic reaction.

Heme-dependent catalase activity of lactobacilli

The heme-dependent catalase in Lactobacillus pentosus, L. sake, L. delbrueckii and Enterococcus faecalis was studied. The catalase was formed by cells grown aerobically in the presence of hematin or for lactobacilli when grown without added hematin, after incubation of buffered cells in the presence of hematin.

Abstract Cortisone and hydrocortisone were found to produce a marked reduction in rat liver catalase activity, but there was no change in the activity of this enzyme in adrenalectomized rats maintained on sodium chloride. Contrary to expectations, ACTH did not alter liver catalase, even in doses of 6 mg./day.
