Structure‐Selective Catalytic Alkylation of DNA and RNA
Angewandte Chemie, 2012A variety of nucleic acids can be catalytically alkylated with rhodium-carbenoids generated from diazo compounds in aqueous buffer through an NH insertion process (see scheme; MES=2-(N-morpholino)ethanesulfonic acid). The method specifically targets unpaired bases such as those present in single strands, turn regions, and overhangs while leaving double-

The efficiency and versatility of catalytic RNA: implications for an RNA world
Gene, 1993Because RNA is chemically and structurally dissimilar from protein, the finding of catalytic activity in RNA was initially surprising. Quantitative measurements of reaction rates show that RNA can be as efficient a catalyst as protein. On the other hand, the potential versatility of RNA to catalyze diverse types of reactions has only begun to be ...

Antisense Catalytic RNAs as Therapeutic Agents
1994Publisher Summary This chapter presents an overview of well-characterized ribozymes with an emphasis on the problems that remain to be overcome before ribozyme therapy can be made a useful form of medical treatment. The chapter illustrates that many techniques are currently being used to enhance ribozyme activity.

Amplification, mutation and selection of catalytic RNA
Gene, 1989RNA, by virtue of its genotypic and phenotypic properties, is a suitable substrate for molecular evolution in the laboratory. We have developed techniques for the rapid amplification, mutation and selection of catalytic RNA. By combining these techniques in an iterative fashion, we are attempting to construct an RNA-based evolving system. Such a system

Catalytic metallodrugs targeting HCV IRES RNA
Chemical Communications, 2012A catalytic metallodrug that targets stem-loop IIb of the internal ribosomal entry site (IRES) RNA of hepatitis C virus (HCV) demonstrates enzyme-like turnover with K(M) of 0.85 μM, k(cat) of 0.53 min(-1), and a turnover number of 31.9 for Cu·GGHYrFK-amide (1-Cu), and yielded an antiviral activity (IC(50)) of 0.58 μM in an HCV cellular replicon assay.

Defining the Inside and Outside of a Catalytic RNA Molecule
Science, 1989Ribozymes are RNA molecules that catalyze biochemical reactions. Fe(II)-EDTA, a solvent-based reagent which cleaves both double- and single-stranded RNA, was used to investigate the structure of the Tetrahymena ribozyme.

Coherent collective modes in catalytic RNA
Zeitschrift fr Physik B Condensed Matter, 1990We establish the existence ofФ4-solitons travelling along the backbone of an RNA double stranded helix. Taking advantage of the catalytic activity of RNA in proton transfer events, we device a probe for such coherent solitary-wave excitations: We prove that the density of domain walls is increased by the same phonon excitations which would enhance ...

Antibiotic inhibition of catalytic RNA function
1996A number of compounds inhibit group I intron splicing. Competitive inhibitors include deoxyguanosine, dideoxyguanosine, arginine and streptomycin; the non-competitive inhibitors include members of the aminoglycoside family of antibiotics. Further screening of a collection of antibiotics for their ability to inhibit group I intron splicing identified ...
