Finite Catenary and the Method of Lagrange
SIAM Review, 1995Summary: We determine the equilibrium of a finite catenary by the method of Lagrange. We give an elementary yet rigorous proof of the existence and uniqueness of the stable equilibrium. The catenary is a nice nontrivial example in teaching constrained minimisation and could be used in testing numerical optimisation algorithms.

A Characteristic Averaging Property of the Catenary
The American Mathematical Monthly, 2016It is well-known that the catenary is characterized by an extremal centroidal condition: It is the shape of the curve whose centroid is the lowest among all curves having a prescribed length and sp...

New Findings on the Calculation of the Catenary
2021Since the end of the 17th century, science and technology have known how to calculate the shape of the catenary line. The formulas refer to a key parameter, the “scaling factor”. As a theoretical calculation value, this factor however can only be determined on real chains to a limited extent by using currently known measurement technology methods.

Statics Experiments on an Elastic Catenary
Journal of Engineering Mechanics, 1997A scale model of a top level guy wire of a 213 m (700 ft) tall radio navigation tower was constructed and tested. The horizontal and vertical components of the guy wire base tension were measured at a variety of wire stress levels and were found to be an average of 2.5% below the values predicted by theory from the equations of the elastic catenary ...

Two Generalizations of a Property of the Catenary
The American Mathematical Monthly, 2014A well-known property of the catenary curve is that the ratio of the area under the curve to the arc length of the curve is independent of the interval over which these quanti- ties are concurrently measured. We develop two higher-dimensional generalizations of this invariant ratio, and find that each invariant ratio identifies a class of hypersurfaces

Transmission line catenary calculations
Electrical Engineering, 1935A simple and accurate method is described for compiling stringing charts for overhead transmission lines, for either horizontal or inclined spans. All calculations can be carried out with a 20 inch slide rule, and no tables of functions are required other than those included in this paper. The procedure is the same for horizontal and for oblique spans.
