Caudal epidural anesthesia in pediatric patients was first described in 1933 as a replacement for general anesthesia in 83 children undergoing transurethral surgery, and since that time it has been shown to be useful in a variety of surgeries. The popularity of this block stems from its efficacy, simplicity, speed, and relative safety.

Caudal Epidural Anesthesia: An Anesthetic Technique Exclusive for Pediatric Use? Is it Possible to Use it in Adults? What is the Role of the Ultrasound in this Context? [PDF]
SummaryBackground and objectivesCaudal epidural anesthesia is the most popular regional anesthesia technique used in children. With advanced age, only the relative difficulty in localizing the sacral hiatus limits its use.

Continuous caudal epidural anesthesia in the horse
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 1984Summary A technique for continuous caudal epidural anesthesia in the horse was developed in trials involving 8 healthy adult horses. The injection site was the first intercaudal (intercoccygeal) space. A Huber point directional needle (Tuohy or Hustead) with a stylet was preplaced into the epidural space, used as a guide for an epidural catheter, and ...

The Use of Caudal Epidural Anesthesia in Clubfoot Surgery
Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics, 1995We reviewed records of 31 children who had surgical release of 41 clubfeet under general anesthesia with supplemental caudal epidural anesthesia. Compared to an equivalent group of 27 children (39 feet), the caudal epidural group exhibited a statistically significant decrease in intraoperative narcotic requirement.

THORACIC EPIDURAL ANESTHESIA VIA THE CAUDAL APPROACH IN CHILDREN
Anesthesiology, 1991We investigated the feasibility of performing thoracic epidural anesthesia via the caudal approach in 20 children (age 62 +/- 38 months and weight 18.5 +/- 7.3 kg; mean +/- standard deviation). Based on external landmarks, a predetermined length of 24-G epidural catheter (Concord Portex 20/24 microcatheter system) with stylet was passed into the ...

Epidural and Caudal Anesthesia
2016There are many approaches to regional anesthesia of the neuraxis. In the pediatric population, caudal anesthesia is by far the most commonly practiced. Techniques for caudal and epidural anesthesia will be described in this chapter. While single-injection techniques are appropriate for some procedures, continuous catheter techniques are probably more ...

EPIDURAL CAUDAL ANESTHESIA IN PROSTATIC SURGERY
JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1928In the choice of an anesthetic in prostatic cases there are several factors of importance to be considered. The first of these is the kidneys. A large proportion of all cases of prostatic hypertrophy are associated with so much back pressure that definite impairment of the kidney function is present. Fortunately, under drainage, generally with a simple

Continuous caudal epidural and subarachnoid anesthesia in mares: A comparative study
American Journal of Veterinary Research, 1983SUMMARY A new technique for producing continuous caudal epidural analgesia (cea) and caudal subarachnoid analgesia (csa) in adult horses (mares) without causing loss of pelvic limb function is described. A modified 17-gauge Huber-point directional needle was used to place a catheter with stylet into either the epidural or subarachnoid space at the ...

Epidural and caudal anesthesia performed under general anesthesia: The pediatric experience
Techniques in Regional Anesthesia and Pain Management, 2000Abstract The performance of regional anesthetic techniques on anesthetized children is an accepted standard of care in the international pediatric anesthesia community. Despite recent editorials condemning its practice in adults, these combined techniques continue to grow in pediatric anesthesia.
