Precise timing of transcription by c-di-GMP coordinates cell cycle and morphogenesis in Caulobacter
Bacteria adapt their growth rate to their metabolic status and environmental conditions by modulating the length of their G1 period. Here the authors show that an increase in c-di-GMP concentration modulates the activity of kinase ShkA and transcription ...

Recombination deficient mutant of Caulobacter crescentus [PDF]
A recombination-deficient (Rec-) strain of Caulobacter crescentus has been isolated from a collection of mutants sensitive to ultraviolet irradiation. The Rec- mutant fails to give recombinants following phi Cr30-mediated generalized transduction or following RP4-mediated conjugation. The recombination frequency in the Rec- strain is at least 5000-fold

Programming Next‐Generation Synthetic Biosensors by Genetic Circuit Design
Synthetic biology enables genetic circuit‐based biosensing to detect diverse targets, process signals, and transduce them into readable outputs or intracellular regulatory activities. However, field deployment and real‐world application of such synthetic biosensors face considerable challenges in sensitivity, specificity, speed, stability, and ...

Fatty acid degradation in Caulobacter crescentus [PDF]
Fatty acid degradation was investigated in Caulobacter crescentus, a bacterium that exhibits membrane-mediated differentiation events. Two strains of C. crescentus were shown to utilize oleic acid as sole carbon source. Five enzymes of the fatty acid beta-oxidation pathway, acyl-coenzyme A (CoA) synthase, crotonase, thiolase, beta-hydroxyacyl-CoA ...

Gadolinium Pollution—A Future Forward Perspective on Human and Environmental Impact
ABSTRACT The widespread use of gadolinium‐based contrast agents (GBCAs) in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been instrumental in enhancing diagnostic capabilities. However, the potential environmental and human health impacts of gadolinium pollution have become a growing concern.

Principles for Rigorous Design and Application of Synthetic Microbial Communities
SynComs are artificially designed to enable inter‐species metabolic interactions, metabolic division of labor, and ecological interactions that can elicit phenotypes like colonization stability and environmental adaptation. This systematic review explores the processes used to construct SynComs, the assessment of the mechanisms of metabolic interaction

Phosphatase to kinase switch of a critical enzyme contributes to timing of cell differentiation
Cell differentiation is an essential biological process that is subject to strict temporal regulation. Caulobacter crescentus undergoes obligate differentiation from a swarmer cell to a stationary, replication-competent stalked cell with each cell cycle.
