Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

The neural crest‐associated gene ERRFI1 is involved in melanoma progression and resistance toward targeted therapy

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
ERRFI1, a neural crest (NC)‐associated gene, was upregulated in melanoma and negatively correlated with the expression of melanocytic differentiation markers and the susceptibility of melanoma cells toward BRAF inhibitors (BRAFi). Knocking down ERRFI1 significantly increased the sensitivity of melanoma cells to BRAFi.

Cytoplasmic p21 promotes stemness of colon cancer cells via activation of the NFκB pathway

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Cytoplasmic p21 promotes colorectal cancer stem cell (CSC) features by destabilizing the NFκB–IκB complex, activating NFκB signaling, and upregulating BCL‐xL and COX2. In contrast to nuclear p21, cytoplasmic p21 enhances spheroid formation and stemness transcription factor CD133.

Dual targeting of RET and SRC synergizes in RET fusion‐positive cancer cells

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Despite the strong activity of selective RET tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), resistance of RET fusion‐positive (RET+) lung cancer and thyroid cancer frequently occurs and is mainly driven by RET‐independent bypass mechanisms. Son et al. show that SRC TKIs significantly inhibit PAK and AKT survival signaling and enhance the efficacy of RET TKIs in ...

Natural, unnatural, and cause-specific mortality among current psychiatric inpatients: a systematic review and meta-analysisResearch in context

open access: yesEClinicalMedicine
Summary: Background: Mortality in psychiatric hospitals is both elevated and poorly understood. We aimed to address a knowledge gap about cause-specific mortality among current psychiatric inpatients using a meta-analytic synthesis of primary research ...

Hospital-Based Mortality in Federal Capital Territory Hospitals-Nigeria, 2005- 2008

open access: yesThe Pan African Medical Journal, 2012
BACKGROUND: Cause-specific mortality data are important to monitor trends in mortality over time. Medical records provide reliable documentation of the causes of deaths occurring in hospitals.

Cis‐regulatory and long noncoding RNA alterations in breast cancer – current insights, biomarker utility, and the critical need for functional validation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The noncoding region of the genome plays a key role in regulating gene expression, and mutations within these regions are capable of altering it. Researchers have identified multiple functional noncoding mutations associated with increased cancer risk in the genome of breast cancer patients.

Results and observations from the reconstruction of continuous time series of mortality by cause of death: Case of West Germany, 1968-1997.

open access: yesDemographic Research, 2009
Though many countries have been collecting cause-of-death information from death certificates for more than a century, these valuable data sources remain underexplored.

Validity of verbal autopsy method to determine causes of death among adults in the urban setting of Ethiopia

open access: yesBMC Medical Research Methodology, 2012
Background Verbal autopsy has been widely used to estimate causes of death in settings with inadequate vital registries, but little is known about its validity.
