Investigation of Polymeric Elastomers for Cavitation and Erosion Resistance

CONFERENCE 2023, 2023
Abstract Damage caused by cavitation and erosion is observed on hydro-turbines, pumps, pipes, gates, draft tubes, and outlet conduits. Mitigating the effects of this degradation on metallic hydraulic steel structures will reduce downtime and costly repairs.

The Resistance to Cavitation Erosion of CrMnN Stainless Steels

Journal of Materials Engineering and Performance, 1998
The resistance to cavitation erosion (CE) was measured using a magnetostrictive device and a rotating disk device for some CrMnN stainless steels (Chinese patent ZL 90 1 02197.0). The microstructural changes in the surface layer before and after CE were analyzed by use of Mossbauer spectra.

Evaluation of the cavitation and erosion resistance of surfacing materials

Strength of Materials, 1990
The results of investigations of the cavitation and erosion resistance of chromium steels are given, the influence of alloy elements on the degree of strengthening of materials is considered, and an engineering method of evaluation of the resistance of surfacing materials is proposed.

Resistance to wear and cavitation erosion of bearing alloys

Wear, 1986
Sliding wear and vibratory cavitation erosion tests in paraffin oil were carried out on bearing alloys, i.e. tin-based and lead-based white metals, Cu-Pb alloy and leaded bronze. In lubricated wear under mild conditions the surface is worn smooth and a slight difference exists between the wear resistances of the four alloys.

Cavitation erosion resistance of various material systems

Ships and Offshore Structures, 2006
Abstract Advancement in both the design and construction of high-speed ships necessitates the evaluation of cavitation erosion resistant materials. Given their weight advantages, aluminum and laminated composite materials are often chosen as construction materials for high-speed designs.

Cavitation erosion resistance of ZrC nanoceramic coating

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part J: Journal of Engineering Tribology, 2019
A ZrC nanoceramic coating was prepared on the bare 316 stainless steel for improving the cavitation erosion resistance by the double glow discharge sputter technique. The phase constitution and surface microstructure of the ZrC nanoceramic coating were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and ...

Investigating Polymeric Elastomers for Cavitation and Erosion Resistance

Materials Performance
Cavitation and erosion damage are observed on water infrastructure. Mitigating degradation on mild steel traditionally includes stainless-steel weld overlays, which create a galvanic corrosion cell in immersion conditions. This can cause delamination of the stainless steel and subsequent loss of cavitation or erosion protection.

Deformation-Induced Martensite and Resistance to Cavitation Erosion

Journal de Physique IV, 1995
Exposure to cavitating liquids can induce surface transformation in metastable alloys, notably the 18Cr-8Ni class of stainless steels. The question of whether such transformation contributes to erosion resistance has not been resolved. To address that issue, two metastable stainless steels (Types 301 and 304L) and a near-equiatomic NiTi alloy were ...

Effect of Globular Microstructure on Cavitation Erosion Resistance of Aluminium Alloys

Solid State Phenomena, 2016
In this paper the effect of globular microstructure on the cavitation erosion resistance was assessed and compared to that of conventional dendritic one. Three different wrought aluminum alloys in as-cast conditions were investigated. The samples were completely characterized by metallographic analyses and microhardness measurements. Cavitation erosion

Cavitation erosion resistance of sewer pipe materials

Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Construction Materials, 2015
A cavitating high-pressure water-jet provided the means by which a range of materials (plastics, clay and concrete) were eroded. The measured erosion resistance was a proxy for an initially unknown combination of other properties: strength, fracture toughness, impact resistance, hardness, surface roughness, and limiting service temperature.
