Chronic Kidney Failure Provokes the Enrichment of Terminally Differentiated CD8+ T Cells, Impairing Cytotoxic Mechanisms After Kidney Transplantation

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2022
Chronic kidney failure (KF) provokes the development of immune senescent CD8+ cytotoxic T cells, affecting the occurrence of graft rejection, viral infections, and malignancies after kidney transplantation.

Platelet Endothelial Cell Adhesion Molecule 1 (CD31) Is Essential for Clostridium perfringens Beta-Toxin Mediated Cytotoxicity in Human Endothelial and Monocytic Cells

open access: yesToxins, 2021
Beta toxin (CPB) is a small hemolysin beta pore-forming toxin (β-PFT) produced by Clostridium perfringens type C. It plays a central role in the pathogenesis of necro-hemorrhagic enteritis in young animals and humans via targeting intestinal endothelial ...

CD31: beyond a marker for endothelial cells [PDF]

open access: yesCardiovascular Research, 2012
This editorial refers to ‘A CD31-derived peptide prevents angiotensin II-induced atherosclerosis progression and aneurysm formation’ by G. Fornasa et al. , pp. 30–37, this issue. CD31 is a 130 kDa platelet–endothelial cell (EC) adhesion molecule that was initially identified from ECs and platelets1 and later from blood leucocytes.2 Mature CD31 ...

Metastatic niche shaped by host factors influences disseminated cancer cell fate

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Metastasis is shaped not only by cancer cells but also by the environments they encounter. This review explores how factors such as aging, diet, the microbiome, lifestyle, and environmental exposures remodel organ‐specific niches in the lung, liver, bone, and brain, influencing where metastatic cells survive, remain dormant, or grow, and ultimately ...

Establishment and validation of glioma patient-derived organoid models

open access: yesGlioma
Background and Aim: Glioma is one of the most prevalent and refractory brain cancers with a high recurrence rate. Current limitations of experimental in vitro models include their inability to remodel the heterogeneity of the parental tumors and their ...

Distribution of CD15+ and CD31+ cells in the oesophageal mucosa of children with eosinophilic oesophagitis across different age and sex groups [PDF]

open access: yesScripta Medica
Background/Aim: Eosinophilic oesophagitis (EoE) is a chronic immune-mediated inflammatory disease of the oesophagus with a multifactorial nature. The prognosis and effectiveness of therapy for EoE largely depend on a detailed study of its pathogenetic ...

The immunolocalization of cluster of differentiation 31, phalloidin and alpha smooth muscle actin on vascular network of normal and ischemic rat brain

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2022
Cluster of differentiation 31 (CD31), phalloidin and alpha smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) have been widely applied to label the cerebral blood vessels in the past years.

Developmental programmes drive cellular plasticity, disease progression and therapy resistance in lung adenocarcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study shows that lung adenocarcinomas exploit developmental branching morphogenesis to acquire a therapy resistant basal‐like tumour cell state. This process was found to be regulated by combined TP53 loss‐of‐function and type‐I interferon signalling, identifying a novel axis for biomarker and therapeutic target discovery.

CD31 − but Not CD31 + Cardiac Side Population Cells Exhibit Functional Cardiomyogenic Differentiation [PDF]

open access: yesCirculation Research, 2005
Heart failure remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. The cellular mechanism underlying the development of cardiac dysfunction is a decrease in the number of viable cardiomyocytes. Recent observations have suggested that the adult heart may contain a progenitor cell population.

Epigenetic silencing of the liver‐specific lncRNA LUNAR promotes liver cancer progression via NOTCH activation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
LUNAR is a liver‐specific long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) that is highly expressed in normal liver but becomes epigenetically silenced in hepatocellular carcinoma through promoter hypermethylation. Loss of LUNAR is associated with NOTCH activation, epithelial–mesenchymal transition, and metastasis, whereas restoring LUNAR restrains metastatic progression ...
