Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Xbra modulates the activity of linker region phosphorylated Smad1 during Xenopus development

open access: yesScientific Reports
The Bmp/Smad1 pathway plays a crucial role in developmental processes and tissue homeostasis. Mitogen-activated protein kinase (Mapk)/Erk mediated phosphorylation of Smad1 in the linker region leads to Smad1 degradation, cytoplasmic retention and ...

Morphology regulation in vascular endothelial cells

open access: yesInflammation and Regeneration, 2018
Morphological change in endothelial cells is an initial and crucial step in the process of establishing a functional vascular network. Following or associated with differentiation and proliferation, endothelial cells elongate and assemble into linear ...

The Arabidopsis thaliana checkpoint kinase WEE1 protects against premature vascular differentiation during replication stress [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
A sessile lifestyle forces plants to respond promptly to factors that affect their genomic integrity. Therefore, plants have developed checkpoint mechanisms to arrest cell cycle progression upon the occurrence of DNA stress, allowing the DNA to be ...

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

DNA methylation and regulatory elements during chicken germline stem cell differentiation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Funding for Open Access provided by the UMD Libraries' Open Access Publishing Fund. The production of germ cells in vitro would open important new avenues for stem biology and human medicine, but the mechanisms of germ cell differentiation are not well ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

COMMITMENT DURING NEMATOCYTE DIFFERENTIATION IN HYDRA [PDF]

open access: yes, 1981
Nematocytes in Hydra differentiate from interstitial stem cells. Desmonemes differentiate mainly in the distal half of the body column while stenoteles differentiate predominantly in the proximal half.

Proline affects the size of the root meristematic zone in Arabidopsis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
We reported previously that root elongation in Arabidopsis is promoted by exogenous proline, raising the possibility that this amino acid may modulate root growth.
