Microfluidic Separation of Blood Cells Based on the Negative Dielectrophoresis Operated by Three Dimensional Microband Electrodes

open access: yesMicromachines, 2020
A microfluidic device is presented for the continuous separation of red blood cells (RBCs) and white blood cells (WBCs) in a label-free manner based on negative dielectrophoresis (n-DEP). An alteration of the electric field, generated by pairs of slanted

The solution supramolecular structure of α2 → 8 polysialic acid suggests a structural cause for its low immunogenicity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
α2 → 8 polysialic acid elicits poor immunogenicity. Small‐angle scattering shows a supramolecular structure with parallel‐chain binding, although in different forms at μm and mm calcium. The major histocompatibility complex requires molecular weights around 2000 Da to produce antibodies, and 2000 Da polysialic oligomers will bind in these structures ...

Clustering and ordering in cell assemblies with generic asymmetric aligning interactions [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Collective cell migration plays an essential role in various biological processes, such as development or cancer proliferation. While cell-cell interactions are clearly key determinants of collective cell migration -- in addition to individual cells self-propulsion -- the physical mechanisms that control the emergence of cell clustering and collective ...

Pattern Formation of Glioma Cells: Effects of Adhesion [PDF]

open access: yesEPL (Europhysics Letters) 88, 28006 (2009), 2008
We investigate clustering of malignant glioma cells. \emph{In vitro} experiments in collagen gels identified a cell line that formed clusters in a region of low cell density, whereas a very similar cell line (which lacks an important mutation) did not cluster significantly. We hypothesize that the mutation affects the strength of cell-cell adhesion. We

Particle and Cell Separation

open access: yes, 2021
Many processors are available for separating particles and/or cells, but few can match the capacity of flow cytometry – in particular the sorting component. Several aspects unique to cell sorting give it such power. First, particles can be separated based on size, complexity, fluorescence, or any combination of these parameters.

Modelling and prototyping of a microfluidic cartridge for extracting immune cells from small volume blood samples

open access: yesCurrent Directions in Biomedical Engineering, 2020
Within the human blood immune cells assume specific functions to modulate and control the human immune response. Consequently, they are used for the diagnosis and treatment of autoimmune and hematologic diseases.

Numerical Simulation of a Lab-on-Chip for Dielectrophoretic Separation of Circulating Tumor Cells

open access: yesMicromachines, 2023
Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are cancer cells detached from tumors that enter the bloodstream with the rest of the blood cells before settling on remote organs and growing. CTCs play a major role as a target for cancer diagnosis.

The cytoskeletal control of B cell receptor and integrin signaling in normal B cells and chronic lymphocytic leukemia

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In lymphoid organs, antigen recognition and B cell receptor signaling rely on integrins and the cytoskeleton. Integrins act as mechanoreceptors, couple B cell receptor activation to cytoskeletal remodeling, and support immune synapse formation as well as antigen extraction.

Flow‐based immunomagnetic enrichment of circulating tumor cells from diagnostic leukapheresis product

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The number of circulating tumor cells obtained from prostate cancer patients was increased approximately 5‐fold compared to regular CellSearch when processing 2 mL diagnostic leukapheresis material aliquots and increased by 44‐fold when processing 20 mL DLA aliquots using the flow enrichment target capture Halbach‐array.
