Label-free ferrohydrodynamic cell separation of circulating tumor cells.
Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) have significant implications in both basic cancer research and clinical applications. To address the limited availability of viable CTCs for fundamental and clinical investigations, effective separation of extremely rare ...

High-Sensitivity in Dielectrophoresis Separations
The applications of dielectrophoretic (DEP) techniques for the manipulation of cells in a label-free fashion within microfluidic systems continue to grow. However, a limited number of methods exist for making highly sensitive separations that can isolate

Continuous Magnetophoretic Separation of Blood Cells from Plasma at the Microscale [PDF]
We present a method for the direct and continuous separation of red and white blood cells from plasma at the microscale. The method is implemented in a microfluidic system with magnetic functionality. The fluidic structure within the microsystem consists of an inlet and a single microfluidic channel with multiple outlets.

Fifty years of dielectrophoretic cell separation technology.
In 1966, Pohl and Hawk [Science 152, 647-649 (1966)] published the first demonstration of dielectrophoresis of living and dead yeast cells; their paper described how the different ways in which the cells responded to an applied nonuniform electric field ...

High Throughput Separation of Cells Achieved Through the Particle Characteristic Dielectrophoretic Response and Further Focusing [PDF]
Previous devices to separate cells by the characteristic force they experience due to dielectrophoresis, which depends on the size and electric properties of the particle, were limited by the flow rates and particle concentrations separation could be achieved at.

Rapid cell separation with minimal manipulation for autologous cell therapies
The ability to isolate specific, viable cell populations from mixed ensembles with minimal manipulation and within intra-operative time would provide significant advantages for autologous, cell-based therapies in regenerative medicine.

Low‐density lipoprotein receptor‐related protein 6 (LRP6) is a key receptor for the Wnt antagonist Dickkopf1 (DKK1). DKK1 protein expression is induced in a bleomycin (BLM)‐induced lung injury model. We show that DKK1 induces proinflammatory and profibrotic genes in lung fibroblasts.

Cell cycle-specific phase separation regulated by protein charge blockiness
Dynamic morphological changes of intracellular organelles are often regulated by protein phosphorylation or dephosphorylation1–6. Phosphorylation modulates stereospecific interactions among structured proteins, but how it controls molecular interactions ...

Performance Metrics for the Objective Assessment of Capacitive Deionization Systems [PDF]
In the growing field of capacitive deionization (CDI), a number of performance metrics have emerged to describe the desalination process. Unfortunately, the separation conditions under which these metrics are measured are often not specified, resulting ...
