The oldest old are among the fastest growing segment of the population and it is important to understand not only the influence of modifiable lifestyle factors such as diet and nutrition on the achievement of exceptional longevity but also the role, if any, of these factors on maintaining optimal cognitive, mental and physical health into advanced age.

To the Editor.— The LETTER "Centenarian Surgery" (218:1435, 1971) is certainly of interest to the practicing anesthetist. However, it was disturbing to note the literature on which the authors apparently based their rationale for the selection of spinal anesthesia in the geriatric patient.

To the Editor.— Spinal anesthesia for a 102-year-old patient as described by Milliken and Milliken ( 218 :1435, 1971) is indeed a rarity but is not a record. After a thorough study of the published material on geriatric anesthetics, they concluded that this was the oldest recorded patient so treated.

Emergence of Centenarians and Super-centenarians
1997Until about 1950 centenarians were quite rare, and their number grew only slowly. Examinations of reported centenarians in the Nordic countries indicate that most reports of centenarians in the last century were not genuine. It is plausible that there were no true centenarians prior to 1800.
