The Centromere-Drive Hypothesis: A Simple Basis for Centromere Complexity
2009Centromeres are far more complex and evolutionarily labile than expected based on their conserved, essential function. The rapid evolution of both centromeric DNA and proteins strongly argue that centromeres are locked in an evolutionary conflict to increase their odds of transmission during asymmetric (female) meiosis.

Premature Centromere Division and Other Centromeric Misbehaviour
1993Premature centromere division was initially described for the X chromosome. In an otherwise typical metaphase cell, one chromosome showed no primary constriction and appeared to have no centromere. G-banding analysis indicated that this apparent acentric fragment was an entire X chromosome (Fitzgerald et al., 1975).
