The cephalosporins are a large group of related beta-lactam antimicrobial agents. Favorable attributes of the cephalosporins include low rates of toxicity, relatively broad spectrum of activity, and ease of administration. Various cephalosporins are effective for treatment of many conditions, including pneumonia, skin and soft tissue infections ...

Allergic reactions to cephalosporins may occur because of sensitization to cephalosporin determinants shared with penicillin or to unique cephalosporin haptens. The exact nature of the haptenic determinants resulting from the degradation of currently available cephalosporins is incompletely understood.

Dual-action cephalosporins: cephalosporin 3'-quinolone carbamates
Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, 1991A series of cephalosporins has been prepared in which the 3'-position was linked to the nitrogen of the antibacterial quinolone ciprofloxacin through a carbamate function. Like the ester-linked and quaternary-linked dual-action cephalosporins reported earlier, these carbamate-linked compounds exhibited a broad antibacterial spectrum derived from both ...

The acidic aqueous degradation of the 7alpha-aminophenylglycinamido-containing cephalosporin cephalexin (1a) has been examined. Two major degradation products have been isolated and characterized: 3-formyl-3,6-dihydro-6-phenyl-2.5(1H,4H)-pyrazinedione (5) and 3-hydroxy-4-methyl-2(5H)-thiophenone (6).

CHAIRMAN'S COMMENTS: During the past 15 years, a large number of cephalosporin antibiotics have been introduced for use in clinical practice. These cephalosporin agents present a confusing picture to the medical practitioner. In an attempt to simplify the indications for cephalosporin use in medical practice, Dr Rybak summarizes in this review the ...

Several cephalosporins are in clinical development as broad-spectrum agents with potent activity against multi-resistant staphylococci as well as the Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria normally susceptible to advanced generation cephalsoporins. These agents represent a novel activity for the class and challenge a dogma that beta-lactams do not ...

ABSTRACT Siderophore cephalosporins are designed to exploit bacterial nutrient uptake systems to gain accelerated uptake across the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria. They contain iron (III) binding motifs that allow them to form complexes that will be recognized as potential substrates by iron-siderophore ...

Abstract The discovery of penicillin by Alexander Fleming in 1929 and the eventual clinical use of the purified product in the 1940s led to the search for other antibacterial agents produced by naturally occurring fungi. Giuseppi Brotzu was the first to isolate a cephalosporin from Cephalosporium acremonium in 1945.
