Attacks on neonates by a male mangabey (Cercocebus atys)

American Journal of Primatology, 1983
AbstractAggressive behavior by an adult male toward selected infants and their mothers was observed during a long‐term study of reproduction in a captive social group of sooty mangabeys (Cercocebus atys). The highest‐ranking adult male in this group was observed to attack and bite three neonates out of a total of 13 infants born in 1982.

Reproductive parameters in the sooty mangabey (Cercocebus torquatus atys)

American Journal of Primatology, 1990
AbstractData obtained over a 7.5 year period from a captive group of sooty mangabeys were analyzed to examine the relationship between demographic variables and reproductive events. Perineal swelling and reproductive data collected from 67 females contributed to the analyses. Sexual maturation, as marked by the onset of swelling cycles, was recorded at

A Study of Facial Growth in the Sooty Mangabey Cercocebus atys

Folia Primatologica, 1991
This study examines the pattern of facial bone growth remodelling in the sooty mangabey (Cercocebus atys) by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of high-accuracy replicas. The efficacy of the technique is appraised by SEM interpretations of facial remodelling in the crab-eating macaque (Macaca fascicularis) and correlative histological examination.

Coccidioidomycosis naturally acquired by a monkey,Cercocebus atys, in Davis, California

Medical Mycology, 1973
An adult female Sooty Mangabey monkey (Cercocebus atys) developed a severe coccidioidal infection while maintained out of doors on the Davis campus of the University of California. It can be inferred therefore that Coccidioides immitis exists on this campus inasmuch as this monkey had originated in Sierra Leone and was transported via London to San ...

Affiliative behavior of adult female sooty mangabeys (Cercocebus atys)

American Journal of Primatology, 1988
AbstractA 14‐month study of 30 adult female members of a captive group of sooty mangabeys investigated their affiliative interactions with group members of varying age and sex. The adult females preferentially affiliated with other adults and interacted less than expected with immature group members.

Male age and reproductive behaviour in sooty mangabeys, Cercocebus torquatus atys

Animal Behaviour, 1991
Abstract The aim of this study was to quantify and characterize copulatory behaviour in sooty mangabeys and to assess differences based on male age. Sexual behaviour, maked by penile erection, intromission and thrusting, began before 1 year of age and the frequency of this behaviur was highest in adolescent males. In fact, these males (1–4 years old)

Grooming with a stone in sooty mangabeys (Cercocebus atys)

American Journal of Primatology, 1988
Abstract“Stone‐grooming,” or grooming with a stone, has been reported in Macaca fuscata. This report provides a descriptive account of a similar behavior displayed by a female mangabey Cercocebus atys. During a study of embracing behavior in sooty mangabeys, one adult female was observed to groom her infant with a stone.
