Spontaneous gastric carcinomas in sooty mangabeys (Cercocebus atys).
Comparative medicine, 2012Sooty mangabeys (Cercocebus atys) are native to West Africa and are a natural host of SIV, which is implicated in the origin of HIV2. They have been used in studies of AIDS pathogenesis, leprosy, immune responses, reproductive biology, and behavior. Spontaneous tumors have rarely been reported in this species.

Vocal Repertoire of Sooty Mangabeys (Cercocebus torquatus atys) in the Taï National Park
Ethology, 2004AbstractThree factors, environment, quality and type of interaction, and phylogeny have been hypothesized to influence the structure of signal repertoires in primates. Much is known about vocal repertoires of terrestrial, savannah‐dwelling species and arboreal, rainforest‐dwelling species, but very little is known about terrestrial rainforest species ...

Estrus Vocalizations in Two Primate Species (Cercocebus Torquatus Atys and Macaca Nemestrina)
Interaction Studies, 1998Vocalizations of sexually receptive females in two primate species, the sooty mangabey (Cercocebus torquatus atys) and the pigtail macaque (Macaca nemestrina), were compared with respect to the acoustical features of calls as well as the reproductive and social factors that were associated with calling behavior. Sixty-two bouts of calling were recorded

Infanticide risk and infant defence in multi-male free-ranging sooty mangabeys, Cercocebus atys
Behavioural Processes, 2010For years, infanticide by males was thought to be unlikely in multi-male primate species. Recent studies have, however, presented evidence of infanticide in such species and a recent model by Broom and colleagues predicts that males' age and rank influence the occurrence of infanticide: youngest and highest-ranking immigrant males are more likely to ...

The accuracy and precision of sexual swellings and fecal steroids as measures of ovarian function and the periovulatory period were compared in 4 sexually mature, individually housed, sooty mangabey females. Fecal samples were collected daily over a 10-week period during the normal breeding season.

Single cortical units with narrow spectral sensitivity in monkey (Cercocebus torquatus atys)
Vision Research, 1962Abstract The narrow spectral sensitivity curves of single units in the area of central retinal representation in monkey cortex are described. Responses to about 60 to 100 mμ were usual. There were hardly any responses to white. The responses were with one or two spikes whose latency and change in latency with intensity were different for units ...

Experimental leprosy in the mangabey (Cercocebus atys): necropsy findings.
International journal of leprosy and other mycobacterial diseases : official organ of the International Leprosy Association, 1985A mangabey monkey (Cercocebus atys) was inoculated intravenously and intracutaneously with acid-fast bacilli (AFB) from a mangabey with spontaneously acquired leprosy. It developed generalized lepromatous leprosy and died 46 months after inoculation.

Social behavior of free-ranging juvenile sooty mangabeys (Cercocebus torquatus atys)
Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology, 2005Sooty mangabeys are terrestrial monkeys exhibiting female philopatry and male dispersal. Studies in captivity as well as in the wild have found that adult females form linear dominance hierarchies. However, while captive studies found no evidence for a matrilineal social system, a previous study in Taï National Park, Ivory Coast, suggested that ...

Hormonal correlates of ontogeny in baboons (Papio hamadryas anubis) and mangabeys (Cercocebus atys)
American Journal of Physical Anthropology, 2008AbstractThis study investigates the relationship between serum hormone levels and morphometrics during ontogeny in olive baboons (Papio hamadryas anubis) and sooty mangabeys (Cercocebus atys), to test hypotheses about the endocrine regulation of species size differences.

Cerebral amyloid angiopathy in an aged sooty mangabey (Cercocebus atys).
Comparative medicine, 2014A 26-y-old male sooty mangabey (Cercocebus atys) was found at necropsy to have a moderate degree of cerebral amyloid β (Aβ) angiopathy in superficial and parenchymal blood vessels of the brain. Senile (Aβ) plaques were absent, as were neurofibrillary tangles and other signs of neurodegeneration.
