Dominance of Ciliophora and Chlorophyta Among Phyllosphere Protists of Solanaceous Plants
Phyllosphere microbiota play an important role in shaping plant health and function but most research has focused only on bacterial and fungal communities. As a result, little is known about the composition of diverse microeukaryotes in the phyllosphere,

Cyanobacterial endobionts within a major marine, planktonic, calcifier (Globigerina bulloides, Foraminifera) revealed by 16S rRNA metabarcoding [PDF]
We investigated the possibility of bacterial symbiosis in Globigerina bulloides, a palaeoceanographically important, planktonic foraminifer. This marine protist is commonly used in micropalaeontological investigations of climatically sensitive subpolar ...

Heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) are considered as major planktonic bacterivores, however, larger HNF taxa can also be important predators of eukaryotes. To examine this trophic cascading, natural protistan communities from a freshwater reservoir were

Phylum-specific environmental DNA analysis reveals remarkably high global biodiversity of Cercozoa (Protozoa) [PDF]
This study presents the first 18S rRNA multi-library environmental PCR survey of a single protozoan phylum, Cercozoa Cavalier-Smith 1998, from a range of different habitats. Phylogenetic analysis reveals at least nine novel clades within the phylum, several possibly at the level of order or above.

Microbial eukaryotes are pivotal components of marine ecosystems. However, compared with the pelagic environments, the diversity distribution and the driving mechanisms of microbial eukaryotes in the marine sediments have rarely been explored.

Metabarcoding and biomass quantification reveal seasonal parasite associations in copepods
Abstract Parasites are important members of ecosystems, and recent metabarcoding efforts have revealed an abundance of microbial eukaryotic parasites in copepods. However, a putative linkage to host community biomass and composition has not been addressed. We performed zooplankton tows monthly for 2 yr at five stations in the Oslofjord, Norway.

Marine protists are essential for globally critical biological processes, including the biogeochemical cycles of matter and energy. However, compared with their prokaryotic counterpart, it remains largely unclear how environmental factors determine the ...

Diversity and Evolution of Sensor Histidine Kinases in Eukaryotes [PDF]
Histidine kinases (HKs) are primary sensor proteins that act in cell signaling pathways generically referred to as "two component systems" (TCSs). TCSs are among the most widely distributed transduction systems used by both prokaryotic and eukaryotic ...

Ventrifissura is a group of poorly studied heterotrophic biflagellates in the phylum Cercozoa. Despite a phylogenetic placement with only weak support and a lack of ultrastructural data, Ventrifissura was assigned to Thecofilosea. In the presented study,
