Cerebral Circulation and Metabolism in Uremia [PDF]

open access: yesCirculation, 1951
Data on 16 patients with uremia are presented. The cerebral blood flow was moderately decreased in patients with generalized vascular disease, but was normal in patients with minimal vascular involvement. In both groups the cerebral oxygen consumption (cerebral metabolic rate in terms of oxygen consumption, CMRO 2 )

Microbiome‐blood–brain barrier interactions in aging — mechanisms and therapeutic potential

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Aging reshapes the gut microbiome (↓SCFA‐producing commensals; ↑pro‐inflammatory outputs), shifting circulating metabolites (↓SCFAs; ↑LPS, ↑TMAO, ↑PAA) that act at the BBB to increase nonspecific transcytosis, alter transport, and promote astrocyte reactivity, heightening brain vulnerability.

Decreased Bilateral FDG-PET Uptake and Inter-Hemispheric Connectivity in Multi-Domain Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment Patients: A Preliminary Study

open access: yesFrontiers in Aging Neuroscience, 2018
Background: Amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) is a heterogeneous condition. Based on clinical symptoms, aMCI could be categorized into single-domain aMCI (SD-aMCI, only memory deficit) and multi-domain aMCI (MD-aMCI, one or more cognitive domain ...

Taxifolin: A Potential Therapeutic Agent for Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy

open access: yesFrontiers in Pharmacology, 2021
Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is characterized by the accumulation of β-amyloid (Aβ) in the walls of cerebral vessels, leading to complications such as intracerebral hemorrhage, convexity subarachnoid hemorrhage and cerebral microinfarcts.

The heterodimeric amino acid transporters (HAT) of the SLC7/SLC3 family: A structure−function relationships and relevance to human pathology

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Heterodimeric amino acid transporters consist of SLC7 and SLC3 family proteins arranged in a conserved structural organization. They regulate nutrient transport across cell membranes, supporting essential cellular functions. These transporters also contribute to xenobiotic/drug uptake and distribution.

Analysis of the Changes in the Oxidation of Brain Tissue Cytochrome-c-Oxidase in Traumatic Brain Injury Patients during Hypercapnoea A Broadband NIRS Study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Using broadband near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and cerebral micro-dialysis (MD), we investigated cerebral cellular metabolism and mitochondrial redox states, following hypercapnoea in 6 patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Metastatic niche shaped by host factors influences disseminated cancer cell fate

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Metastasis is shaped not only by cancer cells but also by the environments they encounter. This review explores how factors such as aging, diet, the microbiome, lifestyle, and environmental exposures remodel organ‐specific niches in the lung, liver, bone, and brain, influencing where metastatic cells survive, remain dormant, or grow, and ultimately ...

Comparison of canagliflozin and teneligliptin on energy intake and body weight in Japanese patients with Type 2 diabetes: a subanalysis of the CANTABILE study

open access: yesBMC Endocrine Disorders
Background While the Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP4) are widely used for the glycemic control in type 2 diabetes mellitus, the differences in the effects of SGLT2 inhibitors and DPP4 inhibitors on ...

Role of unphosphorylated transcription factor STAT3 in late cerebral ischemia after subarachnoid hemorrhage.

open access: yes, 2014
Molecular mechanisms behind increased cerebral vasospasm and local inflammation in late cerebral ischemia after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) are poorly elucidated.
