Clinical study of cerebral small vessel disease [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Ageing and hypertension are the main causes of cerebral small vessel disease (SVD) known until today. Endothelial dysfunction, rupture of blood-brain barrier (BBB) and protein elimination failure angiopathy have become important in its pathophysiology.

Artificial Intelligent‐Enhanced Metabolite Profiling for Intraoperative IDH1 Genotyping in Glioma Using an Orthogonally Responsive SERS Probe

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study presents a novel approach for intraoperative identification of the IDH1 genotype in glioma patients using a surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) probe to measure glutathione and hydrogen peroxide. By integrating AI‐driven deep learning algorithms, the method achieves rapid and accurate genotype differentiation, offering the potential to ...

Environmental exposure of the general population to cadmium as a risk factor of the damage to the nervous system: A critical review of current data

open access: yesJournal of Applied Toxicology, Volume 43, Issue 1, Page 66-88, January 2023., 2023
Abstract Nowadays, more and more attention has been focused on the risk of the neurotoxic action of cadmium (Cd) under environmental exposure. Due to the growing incidence of nervous system diseases, including neurodegenerative changes, and suggested involvement of Cd in their aetiopathogenesis, this review aimed to discuss critically this element ...

Automatic Segmentation, Feature Extraction and Comparison of Healthy and Stroke Cerebral Vasculature [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Accurate segmentation of cerebral vasculature and a quantitative assessment of cerebrovascular morphology is critical to various diagnostic and therapeutic purposes and is pertinent to studying brain health and disease. However, this is still a challenging task due to the complexity of the vascular imaging data.

Associations of Cerebral Small Vessel Disease and Chronic Kidney Disease in Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke

open access: yesJournal of the American Heart Association: Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease
Background The relationship between chronic kidney disease (CKD) and cerebral small vessel disease has been inconsistently reported. In particular, there is a lack of research focusing on patients with acute ischemic stroke, a key area that could provide

Correlation Between Blood Glucose Level and Cerebral Small Vessel Disease Markers in Neurologically Asymptomatic, Nondiabetic Individuals

open access: yesAGING MEDICINE, EarlyView.
The prevalence of neurologically asymptomatic CSVD is common in the nondiabetic population. Glycated hemoglobin A1c correlated with periventricular white matter hyperintensities. Fasting blood glucose was associated with deep cerebral microbleeds. Better control of blood glucose may have a beneficial effect on reducing the risk of CSVD.

Automated Methods for Detecting and Quantitation of Enlarged Perivascular spaces on MRI

open access: yesJournal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Volume 57, Issue 1, Page 11-24, January 2023., 2023
The brain's glymphatic system is a network of intracerebral vessels that function to remove “waste products” such as degraded proteins from the brain. It comprises of the vasculature, perivascular spaces (PVS), and astrocytes. Poor glymphatic function has been implicated in numerous diseases; however, its contribution is still unknown.

3D multirater RCNN for multimodal multiclass detection and characterisation of extremely small objects [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
Extremely small objects (ESO) have become observable on clinical routine magnetic resonance imaging acquisitions, thanks to a reduction in acquisition time at higher resolution. Despite their small size (usually $<$10 voxels per object for an image of more than $10^6$ voxels), these markers reflect tissue damage and need to be accounted for to ...

Brain Atlas Guided Attention U-Net for White Matter Hyperintensity Segmentation [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
White Matter Hyperintensities (WMH) are the most common manifestation of cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD) on the brain MRI. Accurate WMH segmentation algorithms are important to determine cSVD burden and its clinical consequences. Most of existing WMH segmentation algorithms require both fluid attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) images and T1 ...

Phototherapy via Modulation of β‐Amyloid in Combating Alzheimer's Disease

open access: yesAggregate, EarlyView.
This review introduces the light‐regulated Aβ aggregation, highlighting four applications: photodynamic therapy (PDT), photothermal therapy (PTT), photopharmacology, and photobiomodulation (PBM) systems. It also summarizes the current issues and proposes the prospects of photo‐induced modulation of Aβ aggregation and clearance as a therapeutic strategy
