Imaging of Cerebrospinal Fluid Leak
Seminars in Ultrasound, CT and MRI, 2016A cerebrospinal fluid leak from the cranial cavity requires presence of a fistulous communication between the subarachnoid and extracranial space through the skull base. Imaging plays a crucial role in identifying and characterizing the skull base defect and evaluating coexisting pathologies that may alter surgical approach.

Cerebrospinal fluid leaks (CSF) from the defects in the anterior skull base represent a difficult diagnostic and therapeutic problem since these defects are usually silent and become detected only when complications, such as CSF-leak or meningitis, occur.

A 50-year-old woman presented with a 6-month history of unilateral rhinorrhea. She reported no headaches, weight change, galactorrhea, or visual disturbance. When she bent forward, drops of clear fluid fell from her right nostril.

Posttraum atic Cerebrospinal Fluid Leaks
Archives of Surgery, 1967ALTHOUGH the initial traumatic damage to the skull and its contents may be slight, leakage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) through the nose, ear, or a compound fracture of the cranial vault may increase greatly the morbidity and possibility of death. The reported incidence of leakage of CSF in a series of patients with acute head injury depends upon an ...

At the Triological Society meeting in Palm Beach, Fla, Mark Persky, MD, and coauthors presented the New York University experience with cerebrospinal fluid leaks. Persky pointed out that the incidence of cerebrospinal fluid leaks is increasing due to more aggressive surgery at the skull base, as well as the escalating occurrence of trauma.

A physiological sealant for cerebrospinal fluid leaks
Journal of Neurosurgery, 1977✓ A combination of concentrated platelets, thrombin, and fibrinogen was used to adhere a pericranial graft to surgically produced cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) fistulas in dogs. This sealant successfully stopped leakage of CSF in all fistulas produced in both acute and chronic preparations. All control animals leaked CSF acutely. In chronic control animals

Cerebrospinal Fluid Leak in a Premature Neonate
American Journal of Perinatology, 2005Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cranial leaks in neonates are rare, and only four case reports have been published previously. Two of the previous cases were also in preterm newborns delivered at 30 weeks gestation. We present a case of CSF leak in a premature neonate delivered at 30 weeks gestation.

Endoscopic Management of Cerebrospinal Fluid Leaks
Facial Plastic Surgery, 2009Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhea is an uncommon but important medical condition. It can result from trauma, intracranial hypertension, or be idiopathic in origin. If left untreated, significant sequelae can result including infectious meningitis. Beta-2 transferrin is a sensitive and specific protein marker for CSF.

Cerebrospinal Fluid Pressure Monitoring after Repair of Cerebrospinal Fluid Leaks
Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, 2004OBJECTIVETo measure intracranial pressures (ICPs) via lumbar drains after surgical repair of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks.METHODSWe conducted a retrospective review of ICP measurements through lumbar drains during the immediate postoperative period after CSF leak repair.RESULTSEight patients with spontaneous CSF leaks underwent surgery and ...
