Susceptibility of channel catfish fry to Channel Catfish Virus (CCV) challenge increases with age [PDF]

open access: yesDiseases of Aquatic Organisms, 2004
Susceptibility of channel catfish to Channel Catfish Virus Disease (CCVD) has been generally considered to be inversely related to age. However, in experimental immersion challenges, we found that channel catfish fry, 3 to 8 d post hatch (dph), are most resistant to CCV and susceptibility increases with age.

Effect of nutrient restriction and re-feeding on calpain family genes in skeletal muscle of Channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus). [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Background: Calpains, a superfamily of intracellular calcium-dependent cysteine proteases, are involved in the cytoskeletal remodeling and wasting of skeletal muscle.

Morphometric and External Injury Characterization of Rainbow Trout (O. mykiss) Used for Stocking in the Alpine River Inn (Bavaria, Germany)

open access: yesFisheries Management and Ecology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Stocking fish is a common practice in fisheries management, particularly for species of high conservation value or economic importance. Despite its widespread use, systematic evaluation of fish stockings remains scarce. This includes non‐native species such as rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), which are intensively stocked into European ...

Environmental DNA mitochondrial markers to assess potential occupancy of Endangered Yaqui catfish in the Yaqui River basin, Mexico

open access: yesEndangered Species Research
Acquiring data on rare and threatened species can be challenging, particularly in remote areas. Environmental DNA (eDNA) offers a less effort-intensive method for detecting species compared to physical fish sampling methods.

Generation of Myostatin Gene-Edited Channel Catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) via Zygote Injection of CRISPR/Cas9 System

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
The myostatin (MSTN) gene is important because of its role in regulation of skeletal muscle growth in all vertebrates. In this study, CRISPR/Cas9 was utilized to successfully target the channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, muscle suppressor gene MSTN ...

Conduct and Performance of Catfish Marketing Channels in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia

open access: yesAgritech, 2020
Catfish is one of the leading fishery commodities in Indonesia. Its production is high in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, that is, 45.44% of the total aquaculture production and 35.58% of the total aquaculture production.

Freshwater fishes of the Waterberg aquatic ecoregion, South Africa: Diversity, taxonomic conflicts and conservation concerns

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Southern Africa is a region denoted by both high levels of fish diversity, some of it cryptic and unrecognised by current taxonomy, and severely threatened freshwater ecosystems. The Waterberg, a key aquatic ecoregion of the greater Limpopo River basin in South Africa, represents an area with high terrestrial conservation value but is lacking ...

Antibody response of channel catfish after channel catfish virus infection and following dexamethasone treatment [PDF]

open access: yesDiseases of Aquatic Organisms, 2011
Channel catfish virus (CCV, Ictalurid herpesvirus 1) and CCV disease have been extensively studied. Yet, little is known about CCV-host interaction after resolution of the primary infection. In order to determine potential recrudescence of CCV from latency, we established latency by exposing channel catfish juveniles with CCV or a thymidine kinase ...

Tag retention and mortality in inland reservoir channel catfish [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
2016 Undergraduate Research Scholarship RecipientChannel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) is a popular sport fish that is native to Ohio and routinely stocked in reservoirs by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources-Division of Wildlife (ODNR-DOW).

Oxygen consumption from air and water, ammonia and urea‐N excretion, and Na+ fluxes during progressive aquatic hypoxia in Amazonian armoured catfish Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps and Pterygoplichthys pardalis

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract The Amazonian loricariid fish Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps, from the Rio Negro, and Pterygoplichthys pardalis, from the Rio Solimões, are facultative air‐breathers that can use the stomach as an air‐breathing organ. Measurement of oxygen uptake under progressive aquatic hypoxia revealed a relatively high hypoxia resistance of both species.
