Characteristics of Effective Problems
2012This chapter focuses on problems - the instructional materials used in problem-based learning (PBL) to initiate and guide learning. Despite the known importance of the quality of problems in PBL, there is not much empirical research on what constitutes effective problems. This chapter presents seminal work carried out in Republic Polytechnic, Singapore

Shunts, Indications, Problems and Characteristics
Child's Nervous System, 1988My presentation consists of three very specific aspects of shunting system—indications, problems, and characteristics. I have chosen to place these aspects in this order since the indications determine when a shunt is necessary, the problems place its shortcomings in relief, and the two provide us with the desired characteristics.

The Characteristic Polynomials for a Class of Eigenvalue Problems
IEEE Transactions on Computers, 1974Characteristic polynomials are here generated for a class of eigenvalue problems using the singularity condition previously encountered in the solution of corresponding forced system. The process is efficient and requires n2/2 operations in contrast to n3 operations required by techniques such as the Leverrier-Faddeev method.

On a characteristic Cauchy problem
Annali di Matematica Pura ed Applicata, 1987The author considers the characteristic Cauchy problem (C) \[ u_{ts}+\sum^{n}_{j,k=1}a_{jk} u_{x_ jx_ k}+\sum^{n}_{j=1}b_ j u\quad_{x_ j}+cu=f\quad in\quad [0,T]\times {\mathbb{R}}\times {\mathbb{R}}\quad n, \] \[ u(0,s,x)=g(s,x),\quad (s,x)\in {\mathbb{R}}\times {\mathbb{R}}\quad n.

Problem characteristics and social structures make environmental problems easy to create and difficult to address. Environmental problems are externalities—unintended consequences of other goals and activities people pursue. Because people don’t individually experience much, if any, of the harm they create (which is likely to affect others distant in ...

Characteristic Manifolds and the Cauchy Problem
1978This multi-index notation is extremely convenient for partial differential equations, keeping us from drowning in a flood of subscripts. We consider here “vectors” ξ = (ξ1,...,ξ n ) with n (usually) real components and “multi-indices” α=(α1,...,α n ) which are vectors whose components are nonnegative integers.

Adjustment of Material Characteristics in Electroheat Problems
2019 IEEE 20th International Conference on Computational Problems of Electrical Engineering (CPEE), 2019A frequent difficulty occurring in solving electroheat problems is correct setting of the temperature-dependent material characteristics. These are well known in the case of the pure metals, but not so much for alloys, as they depend on their chemical compositions.

The “PIP Problem”: Clinical and Histologic Characteristics
Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, 2013Implants from Poly Implant Prothése (PIP), the French manufacturer, showed increased risk of implant rupture and silicone leakage through the shell. Concerns also exist about the potential irritant behavior of silicone gel filler in these implants.
