Nasal Chemesthesis: Similarities Between Humans and Rats Observed in In Vivo Experiments
Chemosensory Perception, 2015Recent advancements in the study of nasal chemesthesis have primarily been achieved through in vitro, cellular, and molecular techniques, with a resultant shift of focus away from in vivo experimental methodology. Psychophysical and electrophysiological data derived from long-standing in vivo methods form our core understanding of trigeminal ...

Odor and chemesthesis from exposures to glutaraldehyde vapor
International Archives of Occupational and Environmental Health, 2007Assessment of olfactory and chemesthetic sensitivity (feel, sensory irritation) to vapor of glutaraldehyde in young adult females. For chemesthetic sensitivity, assessment included the variable of duration, with focus on whether concentrations initially too low to evoke feel in the eye or upper airway might do so in exposures up to 15 min.Experiment 1 ...

The influence of stimulus taste and chemesthesis on tongue movement timing in swallowing.
Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 2012PurposeTo explore the influence of taste and trigeminal irritation (chemesthesis) on durational aspects of tongue movement in liquid swallowing, controlling for the influence of perceived taste intensity.MethodElectromagnetic midsagittal articulography was used to trace tongue movements during discrete liquid swallowing with 5 liquids: water, 3 ...

Capsaicin as a probe of the relationship between bitter taste and chemesthesis
Physiology & Behavior, 2003Previous studies have indicated that capsaicin, traditionally considered to be a pure chemesthetic stimulus, can evoke a bitter taste and might also cross-desensitize the tastes of some bitter and sour tastants. The purpose of the present study was to investigate further the scope and nature of capsaicin's effects on bitter taste.

Gender Differences in Nasal Chemesthesis: A Study of Detection and Perceived Intensity
Chemosensory Perception, 2011Women are generally more intolerant than men to ambient substances, for which sensory irritation plays an important role. The aim of the present study was to compare women and men with respect to response bias and sensitivity in irritation detection and to irritation intensity.

Has Vertebrate Chemesthesis Been a Selective Agent in the Evolution of Arthropod Chemical Defenses?
The Biological Bulletin, 2007Arthropods use a variety of chemical substances to repel potential predators, but how did they arrive at the suite of chemicals that they use? One way to explore this question is to map chemically defended arthropod species in a multidimensional "compound" space. Clustering within this space indicates species that share similar combinations of chemical

Synthesis of a New Family of N‐Aryl Lactams Active on Chemesthesis and Taste
European Journal of Organic Chemistry, 2006AbstractA new class of synthetic compounds with chemesthetic activity has been identified. They have been designed ex‐novo by structural similarity with known cooling compounds such as menthol, icilin and cyclic ketoenamines. 19 new derivatives have been obtained easily and in high yields by Goldberg arylation or lactam ring closure on the appropriate ...
