Visible Light as an Antimicrobial Strategy for Inactivation of Pseudomonas fluorescens and Staphylococcus epidermidis Biofilms

open access: yesAntibiotics, 2020
The increase of antimicrobial resistance is challenging the scientific community to find solutions to eradicate bacteria, specifically biofilms. Light-Emitting Diodes (LED) represent an alternative way to tackle this problem in the presence of endogenous

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Egyptian alfalfa weevil …chemical control

open access: yesCalifornia Agriculture, 1971
UNTIL NEW OR IMPROVED CONTROL procedures can be found, growers of alfalfa in California have little choice but to depend on chemical insecticides for control of both the alfalfa weevil, Hypera postica (Gyllenhal), and the Egyptian alfalfa weevil, H ...

CONTROL OF CHEMICAL WAVE PROPAGATION [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Using the Schlögl model as a paradigmatic example of a bistable reaction-diffusion system, we discuss some physically feasible options of open and closed loop spatio-temporal control of chemical wave propagation.

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Chemical weed control in peppers

open access: yesCalifornia Agriculture, 1970
WEEDS ARE A PROBLEM in both direct seeded and transplanted bell and chili peppers in California. Cool weather during the early planting season results in slow emergence of direct-seeded pepper seedlings.

Effects of radio frequency heating inactivation on foodborne pathogens in model foods varying in structural matrix complexity

open access: yesScientific Reports
Radio Frequency (RF) heating is a promising alternative for conventional heating to inactivate pathogens during food processing, but a knowledge gap exists concerning RF effects on bacteria in relation to different food microstructural aspects.
