p38 Mitogen-activated Protein Kinase Regulates Oscillation of Chick Pineal Circadian Clock [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and p38 are members of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) family, and in some cases these kinases serve for closely related cellular functions within a cell. In a wide range of animal clock structures,

Intracerebroventricular Administration of Growth Hormone Releasing Peptide-6 (GHRP-6) Inhibits Food Intake, but not Food Retention of Crop and Stomach in Neonatal Chicks

open access: yesThe Journal of Poultry Science, 2006
Growth hormone secretagogues (GHS), including ghrelin, are known to stimulate feeding behavior in mammals. In contrast, intracerebroventricular (ICV) injection of rat or chicken ghrelin, strongly inhibits food intake in chicks.

Developmental changes in hepatic lipid metabolism of chicks during the embryonic periods and the first week of posthatch

open access: yesPoultry Science, 2020
The liver is the main site of de novo lipogenesis in poultry, and hepatic lipid metabolism disorder will lead to excessive abdominal fat deposition or fatty liver disease, finally causing huge economic loss. The present study was conducted to investigate

Studies of the Chick Edema Disease

open access: yesPoultry Science, 1973
Abstract Based on recently obtained analytical information, calculations were made to ascertain the toxic effects of chick edema factor (CEF) preparations for the intact day-old chick, the developing chick embryo, and the monkey. Results indicate that CEF, principally polychlorodibenzo-p-dioxins, elicits toxic responses in these experimental animals.

Metrology of Complex Refractive Index for Solids in the Terahertz Regime Using Frequency Domain Spectroscopy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Frequency domain spectroscopy allows an experimenter to establish optical properties of solids in a wide frequency band including the technically challenging 10 THz region, and in other bands enables metrological comparison between competing techniques ...

Extreme offspring ornamentation in American coots is favored by selection within families, not benefits to conspecific brood parasites [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Offspring ornamentation typically occurs in taxa with parental care, suggesting that selection arising from social interactions between parents and offspring may underlie signal evolution.

Time Course Changes in the Blood Parameters and the Expression of Diencephalic CRH and AVT mRNA Due to Acute Isolation Stress in Chicks

open access: yesThe Journal of Poultry Science, 2011
It is important to quantify and estimate stressful stimulation because stress appears to limit productivity and welfare in poultry. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of acute isolation stress (5, 10 or 30min) on the levels of blood ...
