Electrical pulse stimulation reflecting the episodic nature of real‐life exercise modulates metabolic and secretory profile of primary human myotubes

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Here, we introduced an intermittent electrical stimulation protocol mimicking the episodic nature of real‐life exercise in vitro by alternating low‐ and high‐frequency stimulation. In comparison with widely used continuous stimulation, it enhanced the rate of glucose and fatty acid oxidation, but not the myokine release.

Targeting innate immune memory: a new paradigm for gout treatment [PDF]

open access: yesExploration of Musculoskeletal Diseases
Gout is a chronic inflammatory arthritis driven by monosodium urate crystal deposition and the NACHT, LRR, and PYD domains-containing protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome activation, leading to interleukin-1β (IL-1β)-mediated inflammation.

A Bijection Between the Recurrent Configurations of a Hereditary Chip-Firing Model and Spanning Trees [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Hereditary chip-firing models generalize the Abelian sandpile model and the cluster firing model to an exponential family of games induced by covers of the vertex set. This generalization retains some desirable properties, e.g.

Production of antibacterial compounds by a Steely hybrid polyketide synthase in Dictyostelium

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
By selecting appropriate production species under optimised culture conditions, new chlorinated dibenzofuran compounds, which previously could not be analysed in sufficient quantities, were identified from cellular slime mould fruiting bodies. The strong antibacterial activity exhibited by these compounds suggests a link to the ecological function of ...

Complete gradient-LC-ESI system on a chip for protein analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
This paper presents the first fully integrated gradient-elution liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization (LC-ESI) system on a chip. This chip integrates a pair of high-pressure gradient pumps, a sample injection pump, a passive mixer, a packed ...

Overview of molecular signatures of senescence and associated resources: pros and cons

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Cells can enter a stress response state termed cellular senescence that is involved in various diseases and aging. Detecting these cells is challenging due to the lack of universal biomarkers. This review presents the current state of senescence identification, from biomarkers to molecular signatures, compares tools and approaches, and highlights ...
