Caring for the institution: An ethnography of quality assurance policy in U.S. rural primary care

open access: yesMedical Anthropology Quarterly, EarlyView.
Abstract Based on mixed‐methods, ethnographic research in a geographically isolated rural medical center in the upper midwestern United States, this paper explores the social implications of healthcare quality assurance policies highly reliant on managerial logics, including measurement and monitoring programs.

CO2 Fertilisation of Growth in Wild C4 Grasses may be Amplified by Upregulated Photosynthesis

open access: yesPlant, Cell &Environment, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Rising atmospheric CO2 is expected to have limited direct effects on C4 photosynthesis because the carbon‐concentrating mechanism maintains near‐saturating CO2 at Rubisco. Consequently, growth responses of C4 plants to elevated CO2 (eCO2) are generally attributed to indirect improvements in plant water relations.

System and method for impedance measurement using chirp signal injection

open access: yes, 2013
A method for impedance measurement using chirp signal injection is provided. The method includes injecting at least one chirp signal into the three-phase AC system, and collecting at least one response to the at least one chirp signal. The method further

High Temperatures and Rural Household Expenditure: Evidence From Longitudinal Data in Colombia

open access: yesReview of Development Economics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This paper examines the impact of rising temperature on rural household expenditure in Colombia by combining high‐resolution gridded weather data with a rich longitudinal household survey. Our results show that a one‐standard‐deviation increase in average daily temperature during the rainy months significantly reduces rural household ...

PN-Chirp signal for anti-multipath, multiple-access factory communication

open access: yes, 1992
A hybrid of pseudorandom (PN) code modulation and the linear frequency modulation (FM) or also known as the Chirp modulation is proposed as a system to combat the problem of signal fading in a multipath environment.

Sound offset responses become highly informative in the auditory cortex

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Using large datasets of neural responses to diverse sounds recorded across four stages of the mouse auditory system (depicted and colour‐coded on the left), offset responses occurring after the termination of each sound (time window indicated by the orange shaded area superimposed with activity traces) were characterized and it ...

Scaling temporal resolution from mice to humans: Challenges and innovations in preclinical imaging of translational models

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Temporal scaling physiology differs significantly between mice and humans. Mice have higher metabolism, heart and respiratory rate, as well as faster blood flow rates, brain activity and physiological dynamics over time. These differences influence the temporal resolution needed in preclinical imaging of mouse models to ...

“I'm not in love, so don't forget it; it's just a silly phase I'm going through”: On (not) falling in love during fieldwork in Southwest China

open access: yesAnthropology and Humanism, Volume 51, Issue 2, December 2026.
Abstract During fieldwork, anthropologists engage in emotional, social and economic exchanges with interlocutors, through which to better understand one's own positionality and that of others. When such exchanges occur with an interlocutor who becomes a romantic lover, these exchanges are filtered through desire, amplifying their psychological ...
