Engineering Approaches to Modify Immunomodulatory Functions of Mesenchymal Stromal Cells (MSCs): Tissue Regeneration and Clinical Application

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) show promise for treating immune‐related disorders through immunomodulation and tissue regeneration. This review gives a brief overview of current clinical approval of MSC therapies. It also discussed how bioengineering, including genetic modification, biomaterial delivery, extracellular vesicles, and iPSC‐derived MSCs,

Calcineurin‐Dependent Stress Adaptation Enables Caspofungin Heteroresistance Leading to Stable Resistance in Candida Glabrata

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Caspofungin heteroresistance is prevalent in clinical Candida glabrata isolates and depends on calcineurin‐mediated stress adaptation. This transient phenotype serves as a reservoir for resistance evolution, enabling the emergence of stable resistant descendants under prolonged drug pressure.

Tomato LysM Receptor-Like Kinase SlLYK12 Is Involved in Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Symbiosis

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2018
Arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) is a widespread symbiotic relationship between plants and fungi (Glomeromycota), which improves the supply of water and nutrients to host plants.

Design and Engineering of an Artificial Bifunctional N‐Deacetylase/N‐Sulfotransferase for the Biosynthesis of N‐Sulfated Heparosan

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
An artificial bifunctional N‐deacetylase/N‐sulfotransferase was engineered in Escherichia coli by combining screened N‐deacetylases with an NST domain. The integrated engineering strategy improved enzyme performance. The optimized enzyme efficiently converted heparosan into N‐sulfated heparosan, addressing a key bottleneck in microbial heparin ...

Subversion of Atypical Mucin Traps by a Spore‐Coat Effector Blocks Cellular Immunity in Drosophila

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
While the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium robertsii can evade insect humoral immunity, its subversion of cellular defenses is still elusive. We identify Eac1 as a spore‐coat protein essential for infecting drosophilids by targeting atypical mucins (Sgf1 and Sgf2), which can entrap spores in a gel matrix and thereby facilitate hemocyte encapsulation.

Structural Colors from Modulated Topological Defects in Molecular Smectic Liquid Crystals

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Rather than using dyes and pigments, nature produces the colors of some butterflies and beetles through optical interference phenomena. This study describes an original biomimetic strategy exploiting the spontaneous formation of modulated linear defects in thin films of 8CB, a common molecular liquid crystal.

A Synthetic β‐Mannan Epitope Enables Immunization and Detection of Candida auris

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
A synthetic β‐mannan epitope enables both active and passive immunization against Candida auris. Conjugation to the carrier protein CRM197 induces protective antibody responses, while monoclonal antibodies targeting the same epitope support detection using a lateral flow assay, linking glycochemistry with antifungal prevention and diagnostics ...

Single–Atom Iron Sites Enable Enhanced Arsenic Removal From Water Through Synergistic Adsorption–Oxidation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Single–atom iron anchored on nitrogen–doped porous biochar exhibited ultra–efficient performance, exceptional environmental resilience, and integrated adsorption–oxidation functionality. The multifunctional architecture of the support and the unparalleled reactivity of single–atom iron underpinned the cooperative adsorption and oxidation of As(III ...

Self‐Assembly of Organic–Inorganic Copolymers Toward Bio‐Inspired Cementitious Composites

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Organic–inorganic copolymerization of calcium silicate hydrate and thioctic acid produces a self‐organized nanocomposite inspired by the disordered collagen–mineral architecture of trabecular bone. The resulting material combines a compressive strength above 300 MPa with intrinsic physical reprocessibility, retaining over 80% of its strength and energy

CERK1 is required for chitin-triggered reactive oxygen species generation in melon and is broadly conserved in cucurbits

open access: yesPlant Signaling & Behavior
CHITIN ELICITOR RECEPTOR KINASE 1 (CERK1), originally identified in Arabidopsis thaliana, encodes a pattern recognition receptor that perceives the fungal cell wall component called chitin to activate immune responses, including the production of ...
