A secreted LysM effector protects fungal hyphae through chitin-dependent homodimer polymerization.

open access: yesPLoS Pathogens, 2020
Plants trigger immune responses upon recognition of fungal cell wall chitin, followed by the release of various antimicrobials, including chitinase enzymes that hydrolyze chitin.

The Arabidopsis Malectin-Like/LRR-RLK IOS1 is Critical for BAK1-Dependent and BAK1-Independent Pattern-Triggered Immunity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Plasma membrane-localized pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) such as FLAGELLIN SENSING2 (FLS2), EF-TU RECEPTOR (EFR) and CHITIN ELICITOR RECEPTOR KINASE 1 (CERK1) recognize microbe-associated molecular patterns (MAMPs) to activate pattern-triggered ...

Engineered Chitosan‐Derived Nanocarrier for Efficient siRNA Delivery to Peripheral and Central Neurons

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This study introduces a novel chitosan‐based nanocarrier functionalized with a neurotropic protein for efficient siRNA delivery to neurons. The polyplexes demonstrate enhanced neuronal binding, retrograde transport, and PTEN silencing, promoting axonal outgrowth.

Nanoscale cuticle mass density variations influenced by pigmentation in butterfly wing scales [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
How pigment distribution influences the cuticle density within a microscopic butterfly wing scale, and how both impact final reflected color remains unknown. We used ptychographic X-ray computed tomography to quantitatively determine, at nanoscale resolutions, the three-dimensional mass density of scales with pigmentation differences.

Nanoarchitecture in the black wings of Troides magellanus: a natural case of absorption enhancement in photonic materials [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering 8094 , art. no. 80940H, (2011), 2013
The birdwings butterfly Troides magellanus possesses interesting properties for light and thermal radiation management. The black wings of the male exhibit strong (98%) absorption of visible light as well as two strong absorption peaks in the infrared both due to chitin. These peaks are located in the spectral region where the black body emits at 313K.

Designing for Degradation: Transient Devices Enabled by (Nano)Cellulose

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Recent progress in transient devices enabled by (nano)cellulosic materials is reviewed. Transiency mechanisms, advantages of nanocelluloses, and a suite of applications are discussed. A circular thinking approach coupled with life cycle assessment is applied to critically revisit the potential, advantages, and challenges of nanocellulose‐enabled ...
