A RED oily liquid was detected by Bowen1 in a study of the photochemistry of chlorine dioxide. This substance was isolated by Bodenstein, Harteck and Padelt2 and was found by them to contain three atoms of oxygen to one of chlorine. Chlorine Pentafluoride

The bonding in the halogen polyfluorides is similar to that in the xenon fluorides. Since XeF 4 exists, the previously unreported ClF 5 should exist. This compound has been prepared by heating ClF 3 in the presence of fluorine at high pressure.
