Refining techniques for high‐frequency monitoring of chlorophyll a fluorescence in estuarine systems
Abstract Concentrations of the photosynthetic pigment chlorophyll a are commonly used as a proxy for phytoplankton biomass in aquatic systems. Traditional methods for extracting chlorophyll a in discrete samples limit measurement frequency, while in situ sensor technology provides high frequency chlorophyll a fluorescence measurements at a more ...

Abstract Climate change is accelerating the deoxygenation of aquatic ecosystems, so understanding its effects on biological processes is increasingly critical. An emerging method for inducing hypoxia during experimentation utilizes sodium sulfite (SSI) to scavenge oxygen; however, it remains unclear if hypoxia‐inducing concentrations of SSI are toxic ...

Abstract Flow cytometry measures the optical properties of individual cells and has become essential for enumerating and characterizing marine phytoplankton. Yet systematic comparison of measurements across instruments remains limited, hampering data comparison across laboratories and long‐term time series.

The origins of ecosystem stability have long intrigued ecologists. Recent theoretical advancements highlight three primary mechanisms driving stability: dominance, asynchrony and averaging. While plant community stability has been extensively studied, our understanding of marine community stability remains limited. Plankton, as key components of marine

Determination of barley nitrogen status with chlorophyll meter for high β-amylase in grains
The production of β-amylase is of great importance in two-rowed spring barley cv. Kymppi (Hordeum vulgare L.) in the Finland, where long-day conditions favour high enzyme activities.

Indirect Estimations of Lentil Leaf and Plant N by SPAD Chlorophyll Meter
A Soil Plant Analysis Development (SPAD) chlorophyll meter can be used to screen for leaf nitrogen (N) concentration in breeding programs. Lentil (Lens culinaris L.) cultivars were grown under varied N regimes, SPAD chlorophyll meter readings (SCMR) were

Use of chlorophyll-SPAD meter on potato and sorghum
The SPAD-502 chlorophyll meter measures the transmittance of leaves at 430 nm~ which is a peak of maximum absorbance by chl, providing an indication of its chl content. Chlorophyll content of leaves or SPAD readings can be used as a nitrogen nutrition index of plants since most leafN is contained in chl molecules.

Understanding the scales and mechanisms by which species composition interacts with ecosystem functions is critical for forecasting the effects of environmental perturbations on ecosystem services. However, the linkages between what regulates the ecosystem functions of dispersal‐capable networks of communities (metacommunities) and what regulates a ...

Warming modifies trophic impacts of invading shrimp with impact varying among primary producers
Environmental change drivers, such as climate change and species invasions, can disrupt biological networks and weaken ecosystem stability. Acting together, these drivers may interact and alter the effects on the ecosystem. However, few studies have examined the interactive effects of climate change and species invasions, particularly in aquatic ...
