The KNOX transcription factor ClSP activates ClAPRR2 to regulate dark green stripe formation in watermelon

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, EarlyView.
Summary As a prominent external feature of watermelon, the stripe pattern exhibits remarkable phenotypic diversity, directly impacting commercial value through consumer preference. However, the genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying this important agronomic trait in watermelon remain poorly understood.

Metabolic engineering of stomatal precursor cells enhances photosynthetic water‐use efficiency and vegetative growth under water‐deficit conditions in Arabidopsis thaliana

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, EarlyView.
Summary Stomata are epidermal pores that control the exchange of gaseous CO2 and H2O between plants and their environment. Modulating stomatal density can alter this exchange and thus presents a viable target for engineering improved crop productivity and climate resilience.

Non‐coding RNAs in plant stress responses: molecular insights and agricultural applications

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, EarlyView.
Summary Non‐coding RNAs (ncRNAs) have emerged as crucial regulators in plant responses to environmental stress, orchestrating complex networks that finetune gene expression under both abiotic and biotic challenges. To elucidate this intricate ncRNA crosstalk, this review comprehensively summarizes recent advances in understanding the mechanisms of key ...

Highly efficient transgene‐free ErCas12a RNP‐protoplast genome editing and single‐cell regeneration in Nicotiana benthamiana for glyco‐engineering

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, EarlyView.
Summary Nicotiana benthamiana serves as a unique platform for biopharmaceutical production, offering advantages such as efficient and scalable protein synthesis. In addition, custom N‐glycans can be engineered on biopharmaceutical glycoproteins. Yet, plant‐native glycosyltransferases and glycoside hydrolases need to be removed to prevent undesired ...

Maize leaf yellowing gene ZmCAAX modulates growth and drought resistance by regulating abscisic acid contents through interaction with the ABA biosynthetic enzyme ZmNCED3

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, EarlyView.
Summary In maize (Zea mays L.), leaves are essential for photosynthesis and transpiration and leaf yellowing is regulated by carotenoid metabolism, hormonal signalling and environmental factors. However, the molecular mechanisms linking drought stress and leaf yellowing remain poorly understood.
