Multiple therapeutic targets in rare cholestatic liver diseases: Time to redefine treatment strategies

open access: yesAnnals of Hepatology, 2020
Primary biliary cholangitis and primary sclerosing cholangitis are rare diseases affecting the bile ducts and the liver. The limited knowledge of their pathogenesis leads to limited therapeutic options.

IgG4-associated sclerosing cholangitis: a diagnosis that may change the course of events (review of the literature and a clinical case)

open access: yesAlʹmanah Kliničeskoj Mediciny, 2018
Immunoglobulin G4-associated sclerosing cholangitis (IgG4-SC) can mimic primary sclerosing cholangitis, cholangiocarcinoma, and pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Its proper diagnosis allows for an adequate therapy and an improvement of the outcomes. The article

Clinical Presentation, Cholangiographic Features, Natural History, and Outcome: A Series of 16 Cases [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Secondary sclerosing cholangitis in critically ill patients (SSC-CIP) is an important differential diagnosis in patients presenting with cholestasis and PSC-like cholangiographic changes in endoscopic retrograde cholangiography (ERC).

Coccidioidomycosis Prophylaxis in Liver, Kidney, and Heart Transplant Recipients Residing in Endemic Areas Within the United States

open access: yesTransplant Infectious Disease, Volume 27, Issue 2, March/April 2025.
Our data suggests that abdominal organ transplant recipients residing in CM‐endemic areas with no prior CM exposure may not require CM prophylaxis. Therefore, we recommend implementing a shared decision‐making model among healthcare providers and patients for this lower‐risk patient population.

Secondary sclerosing cholangitis in patients suffering cardiogenic shock

open access: yesESC Heart Failure, Volume 12, Issue 3, Page 2239-2244, June 2025.
Abstract Aims Cardiogenic shock (CS) patients suffer from severe organ hypoperfusion, yet the incidence of secondary sclerosing cholangitis in critically ill patients (SSC‐CIP) in CS is poorly described. Given the limited evidence and severity of this syndrome, we aimed to further investigate SSC‐CIP in the context of CS.

Emerging Links Between Ferroptosis and Neurodegeneration: Implications for Disease Mechanisms and Nutraceutical Interventions

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 13, Issue 6, June 2025.
Ferroptosis, a controlled cell death, is driven by iron and characterized by reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxidation. The impact of lipid peroxides, GSH/GPX4, and iron metabolism–targeting small molecule inhibitors is discussed. Nucleic acids, proteins, and phytochemicals are implicated as inhibitors of ferroptosis.

Accurate and precise in vivo liver 3D T1 mapping at 3T

open access: yesMagnetic Resonance in Medicine, Volume 93, Issue 6, Page 2331-2345, June 2025.
Abstract Purpose To develop an accurate and precise liver 3D T1$$ {T}_1 $$ mapping method using only scanner‐agnostic sequences. Methods While the spoiled gradient‐recalled echo sequence is widely available on clinical scanners, variable flip angle T1$$ {T}_1 $$ mapping methods based on this sequence provide biased T1$$ {T}_1 $$ estimates, with the ...

Treatment and outcome of gall bladder leiomyoma in an asymptomatic dog

open access: yesVeterinary Record Case Reports, Volume 13, Issue 2, June 2025.
Abstract The purpose of this report was to describe the diagnostic protocol, treatment and outcome of an 11‐year‐old, entire male, mixed‐breed dog with a gall bladder neoplasia histologically consistent with a leiomyoma. On referral, the patient had no clinical signs related to the gall bladder mass.

Clinical Trial: A Multicentre Randomised Controlled Trial of Carvedilol Versus Variceal Band Ligation in Primary Prevention of Variceal Bleeding in Liver Cirrhosis (CALIBRE Trial)

open access: yesAlimentary Pharmacology &Therapeutics, Volume 61, Issue 11, Page 1740-1754, June 2025.
There is no evidence of a difference between carvedilol 12.5 mg daily and VBL in the primary prevention of variceal bleeding in patients with cirrhosis and medium‐to large‐sized oesophageal varices. Carvedilol has no untoward safety concerns, is well tolerated, cost‐saving and potentially cost‐effective and is the preferred first‐line primary ...

Longitudinal Relationship Between Elevated Liver Biochemical Tests and Negative Clinical Outcomes in Primary Biliary Cholangitis: A Population‐Based Study

open access: yesAlimentary Pharmacology &Therapeutics, Volume 61, Issue 11, Page 1775-1784, June 2025.
We investigated whether longitudinal monitoring of multiple liver biochemistries and serum‐based non‐invasive fibrosis scores provides prognostic value in patients with primary biliary cholangitis. Our findings indicate that prolonged elevation of multiple hepatic biomarkers and serum‐based non‐invasive fibrosis scores is associated with an increased ...
