Beyond lowering LDL cholesterol

Anadolu Kardiyoloji Dergisi/The Anatolian Journal of Cardiology, 2011
Compelling evidence from randomized controlled studies demonstrated the crucial role of lowering low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in the prevention of vascular events. However, not all patients with low LDL-C levels show similar reduction in event rates.

LDL Cholesterol: The Lower the Better

Medical Clinics of North America, 2012
High cholesterol is often a prerequisite for atherosclerotic plaque. Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is the focus of the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel guidelines. LDL-C ranges from 50 to 70 mg/dL in native hunter-gatherers, healthy human neonates, free-living primates, and other wild mammals, who are notably ...

Activation of T‐Lymphocytes by LDL‐Cholesterol

Lipids, 2008
AbstractNative LDL‐cholesterol can be mechanically stressed by strong vortexing. According to one hypothesis, mechanical shear stress within the vessel can lead to an aggregation of LDL‐cholesterol and subsequently to activation of CD4 and CD8 T‐lymphocytes.

Influence of bezafibrate and colestipol on LDL-cholesterol, LDL-apolipoprotein B and HDL-cholesterol in hyperlipoproteinaemia

Atherosclerosis, 1987
A significant increase of LDL-apolipoprotein B by 13% and LDL-cholesterol by 19% was observed in a group of 9 patients with hyperlipoproteinaemia Type III after bezafibrate treatment. Additional administration of colestipol caused a significant decrease of both LDL-apolipoprotein B by 18% and LDL-cholesterol by 25%.

LDL cholesterol hitches a ride

Science Translational Medicine, 2016
A new lipid-binding protein transports low-density lipoprotein across the blood vessel endothelium and might promote atherosclerosis.

Relationships between lymphocyte cholesterol homeostasis and LDL-cholesterol

Clinical Biochemistry, 1987
The homeostasis of cholesterol was studied in lymphocytes freshly isolated from the blood and cultured with or without low-density lipoprotein (LDL). The content of cholesterol decreased in the lymphocytes cultured without LDL, whereas LDL substituted for cellular cholesterol losses, in spite of almost suppressed LDL-receptor and lymphocyte cholesterol

Beyond LDL Cholesterol Reduction

Circulation, 1996
Within the past decade, clinical trials of LDL-C reduction have convincingly demonstrated that LDL-C reduction in primary and secondary prevention trials can significantly reduce clinical cardiac events.1 Arteriographic investigations have demonstrated that LDL-C reduction can significantly reduce the rate of arteriographically defined disease ...

The undertreatment of LDL-cholesterol: addressing the challenge [PDF]

open access: possibleInternational Journal of Cardiology, 2000
Patients with dyslipidemia are at increased risk of coronary heart disease (CHD), while treatment to reduce low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) concentrations lessens this risk. Consequently, the Lipid Treatment Assessment Project (L-TAP) was undertaken in the US to determine the extent to which primary care practitioners utilize lipid-lowering

Why is LDL‐cholesterol bad cholesterol?

Lipid Technology, 2008
AbstractThe high circulating LDL‐cholesterol levels seen in the inherited disease familial hypercholesterolaemia cause high rates of cardiovascular disease whereas the low circulating LDL‐cholesterol levels following statin treatment cause low rates of cardiovascular disease.
