Treating High Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (HDL-C): Quantity Versus Quality
Current Pharmaceutical Design, 2013Low density lipoproteins (LDL) and high density lipoproteins (HDL) are independent risk factors for coronary heart disease (CHD); decreasing LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) levels with statin therapy represents the primary goal in the management of cardiovascular disease.

The Effect of Gastric Bypass on Cholesterol, HDL, and the Risk of Coronary Heart Disease
Obesity Surgery, 1992A review of 150 charts revealed that 36 patients had pro-operative serum cholesterol greater than 200 mg% prior to Roux-Y gastric bypass. The average pre-operative weight was 266 lb (121 kg) and at 1 year postoperative 166 lb. (75 kg), or 100 lb. (45 kg) lost (77% excess weight loss). We compared the following pre- and postoperative data and found that:

AbstractThe effect of ginseng therapy on serum lipids was investigated in 15 postmenopausal women. The duration of the treatment was twelve weeks and the daily dose of the radix ginseng was 250 mg twice a day. No significant changes were found during ginseng therapy in the serum cholesterol, HDL‐cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

THE TROMSØ HEART STUDY: FOOD HABITS, SERUM TOTAL CHOLESTEROL, HDL CHOLESTEROL, AND TRIGLYCERIDES
American Journal of Epidemiology, 1987Associations between food habits and total serum cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and serum triglycerides were examined in 7,410 men and 7,257 women in Tromsø, Norway, following a screening in 1979-1980. High body mass index was associated with high serum cholesterol, high triglycerides, and low HDL cholesterol.

Decrease in High Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (HDL-C) Levels Following Gemfibrozil Therapy
cclm, 1998Abstract This report represents the continuation of our studies on the effects of gemfibrozil therapy on high density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. Previously, we reported that despite an impressive mean increase in high density lipoprotein cholesterol (20 %), the response to 12 weeks of gemfibrozil therapy was highly variable ...

The CLA/200 ChemPro Lipid Analyzer was compared with the Hitachi-737 for the measurements of cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and triglycerides in serum. The CLA/200 overall precision was acceptable for lipid analyses. For various serumbased control materials, the total CVs (coefficients of variation) of the CLAI 200 were 3.5% and 3.8% for ...

Cholesterol HDL in phenobarbital-treated male and female Wistar rats.
Research communications in chemical pathology and pharmacology, 1981The effect of phenobarbital treatment on HDL cholesterol was studied in male and female Wister rats. An increase of HDL cholesterol was observed in both sexes one day after the administration of the barbiturate. The values of HDL cholesterol returned to those of the control animals l7 days after treatment.

[Cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides and beta-lipoprotein in diabetic pregnancy].
Zentralblatt fur Gynakologie, 1995Follow up studies regarding lipid metabolism in diabetic pregnancy are important in maternal and fetal morbidity. With this background it is particularly opportune to consider the difference of cholesterol, triglycerides and HDL-cholesterol of diabetics and nondiabetics in pregnancy.

Contrary to high plasma levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), closely linked with coronary heart disease (CHD), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) play an antiatherogenic role, through the reverse cholesterol transport from peripheral cells to the liver.
