New insights into cholesterol efflux via ABCA1
Nature Cardiovascular Research, 2022ABCA1 promotes the efflux of cholesterol from cells to HDL and has anti-atherogenic activities. Sun and Li present cryo-EM structures of ABCA1 in the ATP-free and ATP-bound states, which reveal bound cholesterol molecules and suggest a transmembrane cholesterol-transport mechanism.

Cholesterol Efflux: Mechanism and Regulation
1986The removal of cholesterol from peripheral cells by HDL is the first step in what has become known as reverse cholesterol transport. This process involves the efflux of free cholesterol from the membrane of cells and the transport of the cholesterol to the liver1.

Regulation of cholesterol efflux from macrophages
Current Opinion in Lipidology, 2008The lipid efflux pathway is important for both HDL formation and the reverse cholesterol transport pathway. This review is focused on recent findings on the mechanism of lipid efflux and its regulation, particularly in macrophages.Significant progress has been made on understanding the sequence of events that accompany the interaction of ...

From HDL-cholesterol to HDL-function: cholesterol efflux capacity determinants
Current Opinion in Lipidology, 2019Purpose of review The validity of HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C) elevation as a therapeutic target has been questioned, in comparison to enhancing HDL functionality. Cholesterol efflux capacity (CEC) is an in-vitro assay that measures the ability of an individual's HDL to promote cholesterol efflux from cholesterol donor cells such as

Nifedipine Enhances Cholesterol Efflux in RAW264.7 Macrophages
Cardiovascular Drugs and Therapy, 2013Studies have shown that nifedipine protects against atherosclerotic progression, but its underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we examined if nifedipine increases macrophage cholesterol efflux, a pathway known to inhibit atherogenesis. We evaluated the ability of different doses of nifedipine to affect cholesterol efflux in RAW264.7 ...

Cholesterol efflux capacity: An introduction for clinicians
American Heart Journal, 2016Epidemiologic studies have shown an inverse correlation between high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (HDL-C) levels and cardiovascular disease outcomes. However, the hypothesis of a causal relationship between HDL-C and cardiovascular disease has been challenged by genetic and clinical studies.

Role of apolipoproteins in cellular cholesterol efflux
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Lipids and Lipid Metabolism, 1986The effects of serum apolipoproteins, particle size and concentration on the effectiveness of phosphatidylcholine (PC)-containing acceptor particles in causing release of cholesterol from cells growing in culture have been investigated. The acceptor particles were prepared by detergent-dialysis procedures and were either egg PC small unilamellar ...

Efflux of Cholesterol from Different Cellular Pools
Biochemistry, 2000Free cholesterol is very efficiently removed from cells by 2-hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrins. The efflux of cholesterol occurs from two distinct kinetic pools: the half-times (t(1/2)) for the two pools in CHO-K1 cells are 15 +/- 5 s and 21 +/- 6 min and they represent 25% +/- 5% and 75% +/- 5% of the readily exchangeable cell cholesterol, respectively.
