Sediment samples taken at depths from 5 to 50 m in Borge Bay, Signy Island, Antarctica yielded purple ( Chromatiaceae ) and green ( Chlorobiaceae ) phototrophic bacteria when inoculated into Winogradsky columns or directly into Pfennig's medium.
