Perceptual scales for chromatic and luminance blur in noise textures
We have measured the relative perceptual scales for chromatic and luminance blur in dense textures comprised of color and luminance Gabors, using a modification of the method of paired comparisons. We find that the rate at which perceived blur grows with physical blur, when normalized to 1.0 for luminance, is 0.2 for red-green and 0.06 for blue-yellow ...

Nanoscale Spatial Organization of ARC High‐ and Low‐Order Assemblies at Excitatory Synapses
ARC (Activity‐Regulated Cytoskeleton‐Associated protein) mediates synaptic plasticity by forming nanoscale assemblies in neurons. Using super‐resolution microscopy and time‐resolved anisotropy with targeted tagging, the study reveals low‐order ARC assemblies at synapses colocalizing with AMPARs, semi‐circular structures at endocytic zones, and 60–80 nm

On the Mathematics of Music: From Chords to Fourier Analysis [PDF]
Mathematics is a far reaching discipline and its tools appear in many applications. In this paper we discuss its role in music and signal processing by revisiting the use of mathematics in algorithms that can extract chord information from recorded music.

Shadow‐Calibrated Stereo Vision for Colorimetric Sweat Analysis
By establishing a mathematical model that reconstructs 3D structures through geometric features of object shadows under controlled illumination, and combining it with Convolutional Neural Network‐based 2D image analysis for volumetric calibration, this work enables highly accurate 3D morphological reconstruction.

A microtonal wind controller building on Yamaha’s technology to facilitate the performance of music based on the “19-EDO” scale [PDF]
We describe a project in which several collaborators adapted an existing instrument to make it capable of playing expressively in music based on the microtonal scale characterised by equal divsion of the octave into 19 tones (“19-EDO”).

A rotational energy harvesting device that successfully reconciles high power density with mechanical durability through a hybrid sliding‐and‐bouncing kinematic mechanism is reported. The success reported in our paper includes addressing a dilemma where enhanced electrical output comes at the cost of increased friction and wear, limiting the practical ...
