Role of sister chromatid exchanges in chromatid aberration formation

Nature, 1977
MECHANISMS of formation of chromatid aberrations are not fully understood. The involvement of chromosome breakage and reunion1 or exchange2 has been suggested. DNA repair is a possible cause of aberrations and exchanges3–5, but a causal relationship between the two phenomena is not clear6,7.

Sister chromatid exchanges and chromatid interchanges in Bloom's syndrome

Human Genetics, 1975
A comparison is made between the incidences of sister chromatid exchanges (SCE) per chromosome and group of chromosomes and breakage, visible at metaphase like open gaps, breaks, and breaks involved in chromatid interchange formation (CI) in Bloom's syndrome.

The relation between chemically induced sister-chromatid exchanges and chromatid breakage

Mutation Research/Fundamental and Molecular Mechanisms of Mutagenesis, 1979
Studies of classical chromosome aberrations and sister-chromatid exchanges (SCES) suggest independent mechanisms for the two events despite some common features. Examination of chromosome breakage caused by X-rays, visible light, and viruses has shown that few chromatid breaks are accompanied by SCEs at the sites of breaks. No similar observations were

Sister chromatid exchange assay

2006
This method results in the differential staining of sister chromatids during replication and permits the direct visualisation of genetic exchanges between sister chromatids. It therefore provides a direct visual readout for crossover recombination.
